This is what our student chapter is all about.

1. Purpose

The purpose of the BSU Student Chapter of the National Art Education is three-fold. First, we promote art education goals and standards in public and professional educational settings through providing skills and services to teach art to selected K- university students. Second, we learn and improve our art and teaching skills by attending and sponsoring professional workshops and conferences. Third, we share and hone career preparation techniques by visiting educational and artistic sites of interest and value.

2. Examples of BSU Art Education student activities

During the full year of art methods courses and sometimes beyond, our majors are involved in:

a. the National Art Education Association. Convention

b. the Idaho Art Education Association Conference

c. the Saturday Children's Art Classes

d. the Crayola Children's Art Exhibition, (1992, 1998)

e. judging local and state art contests; and

f. sponsoring an annual fine arts poster sale and other fund-raising activities

A number of our students have gone on to serve as officers in the state association and attend the national convention. Our graduates have received state, national, and even international awards in art/art education.

3. In the 1990s, our chapter initiated and continues to present annual art workshops at:

a. the Idaho Art Education Association State Conference

b. at the Ada Community Library; and

c. Basin Elementary School in Idaho City

(We do others in local communities upon request.)

All students and alumni are invited to attend chapter meetings and functions.

4. Collections of Children's Art

As recipient of the large Freyberger Collection of Children's Art, a visual and historical documentation of Dr. Vicktor Lowenfeld's theories about the stages of development of children's art by Dr. Ruth Freyberger, our association periodically hosts gallery exhibitions and receptions of interest to educational and community professionals and students. The work comes with an edited text from Freyberger's dissertation she completed as his first doctoral student in art education in America (1951). We have used the title, "Fifty Years of Refrigerator Art," affectionately.

Two newer collections of children's art are nearing completion. The Russian collection (1993) includes 60 pieces, and the Thailand collection (1997) of 75 pieces will be joined by and a new group of 60 Japanese pieces (2000). Our art education majors serve as docents when these collections are shown. The work is also used for instruction in our methods classes.

5. Recordkeeping

We maintain both a permanent file of archival records in the Art Department at BSU and a portable file of current information that helps our officers know how to perform their functions according to our Constitution and Bylaws, a copy of which follows. These files contain text, videos, tape recordings, photos, and slides of our activities over the years.

Our large hallway bulletin board in Art West contains current events and issues important to our field and is maintained by methods class students throughout the year. It draws many readers and comments.

6. Benefits

Our art education majors work together on many professional projects and activities in their two methods courses where professional support and cooperation are stressed. This attitude of classroom collaboration and professional respect overlaps nicely into our club functions and subsequent careers. Networking with on-site art teachers and school administrators during the 60 clock hours of clinical experiences required preceding student teaching helps prepare our students for successful careers in the field..

7. Membership and Dues

We have no problem recruiting members. Our annual dues of $10 dollars are returned in many ways to the members throughout the year. The monetary benefits, although not directly in cash, considerably outweigh the modest dues. The wide variety of professional opportunities funded for members is noteworthy.

8. Constitution and Bylaws

A copy of our Consittution and Bylaws, fashioned after those of the National Art Education Association, are available upon request or click here
