Art History Programs

Beyond the state-wide requirements for all Bachelor of Art degrees in Idaho, the BA in art history attempts to take advantage of its location within a large studio art department and, more expansively, within a university offering numerous complementary courses. Requirements for the major include 45 credits of art history and studio classes, 6 credits in a foreign language, 12 credits in history and anthropology, yet allows numerous open electives so students can pursue related interests or even minor in another field.

After taking a class in each of the broader chronological and cultural categories of art history, majors will be expected to specialize in a particular region or period. To facilitate this there are 9 open art history credits, 6 seminar level credits, 6 history credits, and 37-39 elective credits. Each student can essentially, under the guidance of an advisor, design his or her own course of study. Students are especially encouraged to take an interdisciplinary approach by exploring the literature, language, history and philosophy of their chosen area of specialization. Study abroad programs are also encouraged.

The art history minor is designed to ensure that each student gets an introduction to the main art historical periods of western art, an introduction to non-western art, and an introduction to more advanced methodological and theoretical approaches. This program is essentially the same as the core of the Bachelor of Arts in the History of Art and Visual Culture.
