History of Art and Visual Culture

"There are more valid facts and details in works of art than there are in history books."
Charlie Chaplin, My Autobiography, 1964

The Department of Art, situated within the College of Arts and Sciences at Boise State University, offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a minor in the History of Art and Visual Culture, the only programs of this kind in the state of Idaho.

Students can choose from more than fifteen upper division courses ranging from ancient to modern art in both the western and non-western traditions. The BA program, taking advantage of its location within a large studio art department, requires students to take two foundational studio art classes as well as attain practical experience via either gallery practices or as a teaching assistant. The BA also allocates numerous open elective credits to allow for the exploration of related interests in such areas as literature, foreign languages, history, anthropology, philosophy or study abroad.

The art history faculty has a wide range of interests and specialties with personal expertise in such fields as studio art, museum and gallery work, art and science, theory and gender studies, classical archaeology, photojournalism and film. All are actively involved in research. Our goals are simple and twofold: to provide a high quality in-state program and academic support for the active arts community of Idaho, and to prepare students for further advanced education in the field of art history.
