Admission Requirements |
| An applicant must satisfy the minimum admission requirements of the
Graduate College (see Graduate Admission Regulations in the Boise
State University Graduate Catalog.
Admission is competitive and the achievement of minimum requirements does
not guarantee acceptance to the program. Applicants must: |
- Hold a B.A., B.F.A., or M.A. degree in visual art from an accredited
institution of higher learning.
- Have and maintain at least a 3.00 grade point average on a 4.00
scale.
- Have completed twelve credits of undergraduate art history prior
to taking courses for graduate credit. Undergraduate coursework in
modern and/or contemporary art history is highly desirable.
- Be accepted to the Boise
State University Graduate College

Application Procedures |
| New students are admitted for the Fall semester only. Applicants must
follow the general graduate application procedures for degree-seeking
students (see Applying as a Degree-Seeking Student in the Boise State
University Graduate catalog). Applicants must also submit the following
to the Graduate Program Director in the Department of Art by January 15: |
- A statement of purpose that outlines your educational and professional
background, the overall objectives in your studio work (including
intended area of emphasis), why you want to pursue an M.F.A., and
why you are interested in the program at Boise State University.
- If you are applying for a Graduate Assistantship, include a separate
statement explaining your interest in the award and your qualifications
for receiving it.
- Three letters of recommendation from professionals in the field.
- A minimum of twenty (20) labeled SLIDES of a recent body of work
with an accompanying artist statement and slide list. Other formats
(CD-Rom, DVD, or VHS) are accepted only for Alternative Media applicants
whose work originates in any of these media.
- A self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of application
materials.

Criteria for Acceptance to the Program |
| Students are accepted to the program by a graduate faculty review of
application materials based upon the following criteria: |
- Demonstrated academic excellence and achievement at the undergraduate
level.
- Demonstrated ability in both the formal and conceptual practice
of visual art.
- Evidence of the ability to think critically and creatively.
- Evidence of an awareness of, and a commitment to the objectives
of our program.
- Demonstrated ability to write clearly and coherently.
- Evidence of an ability to succeed in a rigorous academic environment
of studio and non-studio practices/research.
- Excellence in the applicant’s chosen studio discipline is
required upon acceptance into the program, and must be evident in
the portfolio of slides submitted for review.

Admission with Regular or Provisional Status |
| Students may be admitted to the program with either regular status or
provisional status. Students admitted to the program with provisional
status are required to complete additional coursework to meet minimum
proficiencies. The student will be informed in writing of proficiencies
not met, and advised regarding specific coursework required. This coursework
may include undergraduate credits that will not be counted toward the
completion of the M.F.A., Visual Arts degree. Coursework taken at the
graduate level during provisional status may (upon review) be counted
toward the M.F.A., Visual Arts degree. Completion of provisional coursework
does not guarantee regular status in the program. |
