Raptor Highlights
On September 11th, 1999, an immature Red-shouldered Hawk was captured and banded
by Leroy Fink at the Idaho Bird Observatory's Boise Peak raptor banding site.
This is one of only a few confirmed records for this species in the state, and the
only one ever banded in Idaho.
Songbird Highlights
During 1997 and 1998 we captured a total of 61 species in our songbird nets. We
continued to add to our species list in 1999, but a little more slowly. Other than a
Blackpoll Warbler and a Golden-crowned Sparrow caught on the same day at Willow (both
had been caught in previous years), we didn't catch any regionally rare species.
However, some of our additions are rare locally and all were exciting to us. New
species from 1999 included Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Downy Woodpecker, Pacific-slope
Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow-breasted Chat, Northern Waterthrush, American
Redstart (seen only in 1998), and Lark Sparrow. We also captured a previously-banded
Pine Siskin on September 2nd that had been banded in Michigan on April 11th of this year
(this being our first foreign recapture)!!
Owl Highlights
We captured 848 Saw-whet Owls, 51 Flammulated Owls, 2 Boreal Owls, and 1 Pygmy Owl
during 1999 at Lucky Peak! This is the first project of its kind in the western U.S.
We captured more forest owls than any other owl banding station in the U.S. or Canada!
Not bad for a first try! |
