Linda Hamson

Welcome to another academic year at Boise State University.  I am honored to serve as BSUAOP’s President.  I want to continue on the work of our past president, Sue Antonich, as we work towards fulfilling the BSUAOP purpose; to assist members in reaching a professional level of excellence, to promote positive attitudes and encourage further training in specific fields relevant to each member’s responsibilities within the University.

Looking towards the 2009-2010 academic year I realized that we will all be pushed to do a little more work with a little less in the way of resources.  Given the economic realities we are facing in the next year, I believe that this year’s theme, “Work like you don’t need the money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like no one is watching” can act as a reminder to us.

We’ll need to remember to work like we don’t need the money because when we work only for money, we lose a piece of ourselves that allows us to be at our best.   We go into a funk, and spend our time spinning negativity wherever we go.    We want to leave a positive wake as we walk by, not a negative wake.  Work like you don’t need the money.

We’ll need to remember to love like we’ve never been hurt, when we support each other and share our knowledge with each other.  One of the most counterproductive things colleagues can do is be stingy with knowledge or specials skills.  We are each one of us amazing and collectively, capable of amazing accomplishments.  Love like you’ve never been hurt.

And we’ll need to remember to dance like no one is watching, because we need to dance every day.  Dancing, metaphorically or physically, is an expression of joy or delight.  How can you be angry, dispirited or negative when you’re dancing?  And given that thought, it doesn’t matter who’s watching because that little shuffle move is all for us; to keep ourselves balanced.

Work is a huge part of our lives, but it’s not our whole life.  If you have a really bad day and the only time you can manage a dance is when you’re walking to your car at the end of that day, then dance on your way out.  Just remember, dance like no one is watching.

This year, as I serve my term as BSUAOP President, I hope that we can all help each other remember to give of ourselves to each other, be positive role models for each other and our co-workers, and remember to keep the balance in our lives.
