Episode 1 As of July 12, 2007, there have been 1087 executions (including 11 women, 22 juveniles, and 44 mentally retarded) since 1976. As of January 1, 2007, there are 3,350 individuals on death row (including 50 women). California has the largest death row population, but 80% of the executions have occurred in the South. Texas has executed the largest number of individuals in the modern era. Over 120 individuals have had their wrongful convictions exonerated since 1973. Race of the victim continues to be a predictor of who receives a sentence of death.
