Episode 3 General deterrence is one of the primary goals of punishment. However, the research suggests that capital punishment is no more of an effective deterrent than life in prison without parole. Some evidence suggests that homicides increase slightly after a well-publicized execution. Implied in the concept of deterrence is the notion of future dangerousness. Research has shown that future dangerousness is difficult to predict on an individual basis, but a majority of murderers rarely kill again.
