Episode 5 As of June 5, 2007, there have been 1078 executions (including 11 women, 22 juveniles, and 44 mentally retarded) since 1976. As of January 1, 2007, there are 3,350 individuals on death row (including 51 women). Evidence suggests a gender bias in the application of the death penalty. While the U.S. currently prohibits the execution of juveniles and mentally-retarded offenders, prior history reveals several important international and pragmatic issues.
