Breakin' the Law
Royal Law
Most recognized the king as the source of law. Theoretically, God was the ultimate source, but on a practical, secular, human level, it was kings who made laws and kings who were the ultimate enforcers of the law. Parliament as a source of law was something that began to happen only in the 15th century and then only in England.
Royal law applied to all in the realm, in theory. In practice, royal justice was more limited. Treason, lèse-majeste, coin clipping and counterfeiting, poaching, assault on royal officials were the sorts of things that would up in royal court.
Royal courts were also courts of appeal; for the nobility everywhere, in some places also for commoners.
