The Reformation

Calvin in Flight

As a result of the Affair of the Placards, Calvin found it necessary to leave France. He made first for Italy, where he stayed only briefly, then headed for Strasbourg, which was one of the main gathering-points for religious refugees from all across Europe.

On his way, he passed through Geneva. There he found Guillaume Farel, who was one of the prime movers in the Affair of the Placards. Farel persuaded Calvin to stay there in Geneva, that the city was ripe for true reform, and that these two Frenchmen were the ones to do God's work there.
