OCFDP Compensation Guidelines (2008-2009)

Instruction for online classes is paid at the same pay rates as instruction for in-person classes.
  • Adjuncts may teach online classes at their appropriate step rate.
  • Full-time faculty may teach online as part of their teaching load.
  • Full-time faculty may teach online on overload at the adjunct step 2 rate.

Funding for Instruction

Fall and Spring Semesters

  • Full-time faculty members teaching online as part of their load are paid by their academic departments through their annual contracts.
  • An adjunct or full-time faculty member on overload may be paid directly from the DE appropriated budget with prior agreement. Please note that this budget is limited and will be focused on courses and programs that are part of a strategic plan and meeting the needs of distance students. If any department's plans or needs might involve funding from the DE budget, please discuss with Janet Atkinson at the earliest possible time.
  • An adjunct or full-time faculty member on overload may be paid by the academic college/department but may not be paid with A260 funds.

Summer Session

  • Online courses are paid under the summer guidelines by the summer budget.

All Semesters

  • Instruction for online courses that are part of a grant or self-support funded program must be paid for by that program.

Funding for Training and Online Course Development

The following financial resources are available for the OCFDP.

Note: For all payment options listed below, funds will only be paid when the requirements discussed above are met and confirmed. If requirements are not met and confirmed, the funds will not be paid.

  1. Training. The DE department provides $2,000 in funding for faculty participation in the OTT course.
  2. Online Course Development. The DE department provides $3,000 for the development of a new online course. The term of the course development agreement will start with the date of approval and continue until 4 weeks prior to the start of the teaching semester in which the course will be taught. Although an extension may be granted, lack of progress may negate the agreement.

Funding Sources

  • The DE department can fund the training and course development of up to 10 participants for each of the 3 cohorts in 2008-2009, based on available resources.
  • Departments and colleges may supply the training and/or development funding; however, A260 funds may not be used.
  • When the course to be taught online is part of a grant or self-support program, the grant or self-support budget must fund the training and development.

Payment Avenues

The funding is distributed as follows.

Adjunct Faculty. Adjunct instructors may receive up to 2 stipends-$2,000 for training and $3,000 for course development. Stipends are paid directly to the adjunct as lump sums after all requirements are met and confirmed.

Full-time Faculty or Special Lecturers. Compensation options for full-time faculty or special lecturers (those on benefits) are listed below. The DE director will work with the department chair and college dean to determine the appropriate method for a given faculty member and a given course.

  • Release time with department reimbursement. The academic department allows the faculty member release time for training and/or course development. DE pays the department the designated amount(s) once the commitments are met. The department covers the cost of any lost course(s) internally; it may not request new A260 funds for this purpose. If the faculty member does not complete training or course development requirements, the department will not receive the funds.
  • Release time with adjunct replacement. The academic department/college allows release time for the faculty member for training and/or course development. DE pays for a maximum of the designated funds for the replacement course(s) taught by an adjunct. Payment is made directly to the adjunct at their appropriate step rate. If the faculty member does not meet the training or development requirements, the department reimburses DE for the adjunct pay.
  • Overload. The academic department/college recommends that faculty member participate in training and/or course development during the academic year on overload, ensuring the overload assignment is appropriate. DE pays a training and/or development stipend directly to the faculty member.
  • Full-time faculty summer development. The department/college recommends that the faculty member develop the course in the summer. DE pays a training and/or development stipend directly to the faculty member.
