Knowledge Network
Introduction
Knowledge Network courses are delivered as live, interactive courses received at various sites in the Treasure Valley and as cable TV courses. All Knowledge Network classes are time and location specific, meaning that you are required to attend class in-person and/or take exams in-person as required. Main campus courses are transmitted via one-way video and two-way audio to sites listed in the class schedule. Site-based students interact "live" with the on-campus class. Cable sections are available to CableOne subscribers ONLY and students view them in the comfort of their homes.
The model below explains the Knowledge Network process visually:

Cable Television Section
- Description:
- While all of the Knowledge Network courses are broadcast on cable television, some courses also provide the opportunity to register for a cable section. In these cable sections, students participate by watching the live broadcast or videotaping broadcasts for later viewing. To do this, students must be self-motivated as the majority or all of class activity occurs away from a traditional classroom. Videotaped broadcasts offer the ability to view missed class meetings before the next scheduled broadcast, to reinforce previously viewed material, and to effectively review for exams. Home equipment failure or recording problems are your responsibility and are not acceptable excuses for missing a lecture.
- Requirements for Student:
- Mandatory class participation including viewing all broadcasts prior to the next scheduled class, timely completion of readings and assignments, and taking exams in person at the selected receive site as scheduled.
- Ability to contact the instructor independently and/or to contact the cable facilitator via telephone or email in a timely manner with questions or problems.
- Timely completion of readings, assignments, and the ability to take exams at the receive site as scheduled. Attend any required co-requisite in-person labs. Final exams are proctored on the day and at the time determined by the published final exam schedule. Finals may or may not include a brief class broadcast.
- A paid subscription to CableOne (channel 95) cable service in the Treasure Valley throughout the semester. Call CableOne at 208.375.8288. The cost for this service is your responsibility. This requires a television that is cable-ready. Also recommended, programmable VCR with blank videotapes.
- Frequent access to the BroncoMail student email account assigned to every student at Boise State. Prior to the start of class, a syllabus and test site selection form are emailed. You must select a test site and return the information per instructions.
- Possession of a Boise State student identification card for testing purposes and for access to the Albertsons Library.
- Ability to tape broadcasts of any classes you anticipate missing or view backup lecture videotapes for transmission difficulties. Backup videotapes are available in the Albertsons Library Curriculum Resource Center on the Boise main campus for up to three weeks after the original broadcast date and are not available for checkout. Be prepared to present your student identification card to view the videotapes. Students are expected to view the missed class prior to the next scheduled class.
- May require access to U.S. Mail service. Student must ensure a current postal mailing address on record with Boise State University. Update address information via BroncoWeb.
- Provided by Boise State University:
- Broadcast of in-person class through CableOne ONLY.
- Academic support provided by the cable facilitator, Sandy Howell, 208.426.4216 or showell@boisestate.edu.
- Backup lecture videotapes (see above).
