Teleweb Courses at Boise State
Description
These college-level courses combine:
- Internet class participation, using Blackboard, the Web-based learning management system used at Boise State.
- Textbook readings, assignments, and tests.
- 13 one-hour video programs by local and national experts.
Students can access the video programming in one of three ways:
- Idaho Public Television (scheduling is provided).
- The DVD course set, purchased either from the BSU Bookstore or Intelecom Student Store.
- Streaming video access, purchased from the Intelecom Student Store.
Requirements for Students
- The ability to view, independently, 13 one-hour video programs consisting of two (2) half-hour or a single one-hour broadcast segment each week. Students are expected to view the weekly video during the scheduled timeline.
- The ability to read the textbook, complete and turn in assignments, and take tests as required.
- Access to Idaho Public Television throughout the semester to view recorded programs, or a computer to view programming segments on DVD or streaming video, purchased by the student as described above.
- Optional, but recommended: programmable VCR and blank videotapes.
- Proficient basic computer and Internet skills. Before class begins, you must be able to: navigate the Internet using a browser; navigate among and between multiple open windows; open, close, and save files and attachments; and send and receive email attachments. If you do not have these skills, the instructor may administratively drop you from the course.
- A mature learning style and the ability to be organized and self motivated.
- Effective written communication skills and the ability to understand written information and communication.
- Mandatory class participation as required by the instructor. Students can expect to have daily to weekly activities and assignments with strictly enforced deadlines. A discussion board is also often used for real-time discussion between the instructor and other students.
- Ability to contact the instructor independently via telephone or email in a timely manner with questions or problems.
- Frequent access to the BroncoMail student email account assigned to every student at Boise State. Prior to the start of class, an email will be sent to each enrolled student's BroncoMail account. The instructor will provide important information concerning class startup, including instructions on how to access the course website.
- Possession of a Boise State student identification number for access to online resources and a student ID card for proctored testing purposes, if required.
- Access to a computer with these minimum capabilities: Pentium PC Computer; 56K modem or better (recommended); network connection or an Internet Service Provider (ISP), Windows 95 or higher OR a Macintosh running system 7.5 or higher; minimum of 64MB RAM (recommended); Web browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher is recommended. Other software requirements may include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat Reader, Real Player, or other specialized hardware or software as specified by the instructor. - Copies of the weekly broadcast tapes are available in the Albertsons Library Curriculum Resource Center on the Boise campus and are not available for checkout. Be prepared to present student identification card to view the videotapes. View the missed tapes as soon as possible, preferably prior to the next scheduled broadcast.
