INRA Subsurface Science Graduate Program
Subsurface science is the study of the processes that occur in the uppermost part of the Earth's crust (nominally the first few hundred meters). These processes involve the complex interplay of phenomena that have traditionally been studied in isolation such as biological activity, geochemical reactions, multiphase fluid flow, mechanical deformation, and the flux of heat and electromagnetic energy. Subsurface science is a field rich in opportunities for graduate research and education across a broad spectrum of disciplines.
The Subsurface Science Graduate Program (SSGP) is a long-term collaborative effort by the universities of the Inland Northwest Research Alliance (INRA) to enhance research and education in the subsurface sciences. Development of the SSGP is the primary goal of the Subsurface Science Research Institute (SSRI), an INRA project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy under contract DE-FG07-02ID14277. Activities of the SSRI include the development and implementation of multi-institutional graduate courses in the subsurface sciences, the acquisition and installation of course distance delivery systems, and the recruitment of outstanding graduate students through the SSGP fellowship and research support program. The SSGP is designed to support the subsurface science emphasis of the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) by extension of graduate faculty status to participating INEEL scientists and engineers and by inclusion of a classroom site in Idaho Falls in the distance delivery network.
