CAES/EPI Seeking
Director/Associate Director
Boise State University invites interested applicants for
the position of Director of the Energy Policy Institute and
Associate Director of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies, to
become a part of our team to continue our quest toward becoming a
Metropolitan Research University of Distinction. The EPI Director
will hold a joint appointment as one of the three university
Associate Directors for the Center for Advanced Energy Studies. EPI
is part of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) being
developed in collaboration with the Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA)
at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), the University of Idaho and
Idaho State University. The director will report to BSU's Dean of
the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs. While the EPI
director will primarily work in Boise, some travel to CAES in Idaho
Falls will be required. A complete job description is posted on the

Boise State Hires
New Assistant Professor
Boise State has recently hired David Solan as a new
Assistant Professor. Dr. David Solan graduated with a PhD in
political science from the University of Delaware in 2002. His
primary fields were in environmental and energy policy, comparative
politics, public policy and international relations. Dr. Solan moved
to Boise from Washington D.C., where he was a senior policy advisor
to the Deputy Administrator at the US EPA. He has written numerous
articles on energy policy, including U.S. Energy Policy in a
Global Context: Lessons from Peak Oil and Energy Independence
and Securing America's Energy Future.

EPI to get $180k
of $1.6 million alloocated to CAES
The Center for Advanced Energy Studies continues to move
closer to establishing a unique, world-class energy research and
education center in Idaho. CAES has been the beneficiary of a
dedicated congressional delegation, active state legislators and an
insightful governor, all of whom have sought to position Idaho as a
leader in the nation's energy research.

EPI Assistant
Director Named to the Idaho Strategic Energy Alliance Board
of Directors
Michael Louis, Assistant Director of the Energy Policy
Institute and affiliate member of the Center for Advanced Energy
Studies has accepted an invitation to serve on Governor Otter’s
Idaho Strategic Energy Alliance Board of Directors. The intent of
the Alliance is to facilitate the development of renewable sources
of energy so that Idaho can obtain 25% of its energy from renewable
sources by the year 2025. The Board is intended to define the
direction, scope, and parameters of the Alliance as well as enable
plans from various task forces to reach the program’s goal.
EPI Receives
Funding to Study Effects of Civic Deliberation on Public's
Opinion on Energy Alternatives
Idaho currently gets 50% of all the energy it consumes
from outside of the state. Over the past couple of years, three
plans for coal-fired and nuclear power plants have been submitted.
However, the coal-fired power plant application and one of the
nuclear power plant proposals were later retracted.

EPI and CAES Participate in Strategic Energy
Alliance
EPI, along with other members of CAES, is participating
in the Governor’s Idaho Strategic Energy Alliance. The goal of the
Alliance is to enable the development of a sound energy portfolio
for Idaho that includes diverse energy resources and production
methods, that provides the highest value to the citizens of Idaho,
that ensures quality stewardship of environmental resources, and
that functions as an effective, secure, and stable energy system.

EPI Conducts
Energy Policy Survey
In 2006 and 2007 the Energy Policy Institute conducted a
statewide public opinion survey to understand public opinion on
recommendations discussed during the development of the Idaho State
Energy Plan. Questions ranged from energy specific questions like
feelings towards renewable energy, the use of nuclear power, to more
general policy questions like views on Idaho transportation and
planning.
