Course Description
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:15-4:30 p.m., EA 102
This practicum course will allow hands-on work
with Ahsahta Press while we study small press
practices in terms of manuscript solicitation,
selection, and editing; book design and production;
and promotional and marketing issues, including
presence on the internet. During the course we
will also log and read the manuscripts submitted
for the Sawtooth Poetry Prize competition, which
will be coming in during the months of January
and February. TOP
Copyediting: A Practical Guide, Judd
We will also be working with Ahsahta Press materials,
including the manuscripts for the Sawtooth Poetry
Prize, the text of Peggy Hamilton's book Forbidden
City, and the text of Dan Beachy-Quick's
book Spell. TOP
You are asked to take on two projects during the
semester, one of which will be reading Sawtooth
manuscripts and assisting in the selection of
15 to 20 to be sent to the final judge. The other
might include any of the following, or one of
your own devising:
- logging Sawtooth manuscripts as they
arrive (requires very rudimentary Microsoft Excel
knowledge)
- work on the Ahsahta Press Catalog
(requires Quark Xpress knowledge)
- setting up readings for our authors
(requires researching reading venues and making
arrangements with Aaron McCollough, Heather Sellers,
and Lisa Fishman)
- creating Amazon listings for all
our books (requires basic computer skills)
- preparing updated information on
all our authors in terms of biographies, photos,
and other publications for use on the Ahsahta
Press website, and updating the website. This
will require composing a letter to go out to everyone
we have addresses for, and in the case of authors
who are deceased, researching and finding appropriate
materials. Students working on updating the site
will need some knowledge of Dreamweaver or HTML,
and/or Photoshop or other photo-editing applications)
- preparing materials for our AWP display
table (Feb. 26-March 1)
- fulfilling Ahsahta Press orders (invoicing,
packing, shipping. This requires learning the
Anybook program, which keeps track of inventory,
sales, and billing for the press)
A weekly journal of work accomplished and questions/thoughts/reactions
to that work and the class is required. This will
be turned in at the end of the semester, but you
should bring it to class weekly so I can look
at it periodically. An evaluative response to
the work of the semester is also required at the
end of the course. TOP
Attendance is required. You are allowed two absences, after which your course grade will be reduced by half a letter grade for each unexcused absence. PLEASE NOTIFY ME if you know you will be absent, although after the second absence you should not expect to be excused. It is possible to fail the class through poor attendance alone. TOP
Your grade is determined by the following factors: attendance, participation, quality and amount of work on your projects, journal entyries, final evaluative response. Please meet with me during the semester, especialoly if you have any questions about your progress in the course. TOP
