ENGL406: Advanced Poetry Workshop

Things Are Happening [cover] Tea [cover]
This class is for serious writers of poetry who have already completed ENGL205. The course is a poetry workshop, and students will be expected to write a poem per week throughout the semester. We will also read and discuss several books, including Distinguished Visiting Writer Joshua Beckman's first book Things are Happening and visiting writer D.A. Powell's Tea. We will also read Spar by Karen Volkmann, Works and Texts by British artist Tom Phillips, and The Next Ancient World by Jennifer Michael Hecht. All students will be expected to attend at least two poetry readings. MORE>>

ENGL507: Small Press Publishing

Copyediting: A Practical Guide [cover] Ahsahta ram logo
Students in this class will get hands-on experience working with Ahsahta Press during Spring 2003. We will be preparing a book for publication (Forbidden City by Peggy Hamilton) as well as logging and reading manuscripts for the second annual Sawtooth Poetry Prize contest, to be judged by poet Joe Wenderoth. (Our job is to narrow the field down to the ten best manuscripts to send on to Joe.) By the end of the term, students will have learned how to copy-edit and proofread a manuscript, and what stages that manuscript must go through before it becomes a published book. They will also have learned, from reading manuscripts of all skill levels, how better to articulate their own poetry aesthetic—how to distinguish a publishable book from one that is not. All students will work on projects relating to press business, such as creating advertising materials, preparing our booth for the annual AWP conference, and devising marketing strategies. MFA students who expect to prepare and publish manuscripts will especially benefit from this behind-the-scenes look at how a small press works. MORE>>
