The Student Experience

Linguistic Society of Boise State

Join a student organization whose mission is to foster a sense of community among students interested in linguistics at Boise State University, provide educational educational activities and service to the campus and community, and to further promote the linguistics emphasis and minor throughout campus.

Project SHINE

While volunteering or interning with Project SHINE (Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders), linguistics students work with elders who arrived in the US as resettled refugees, and who are students at the English Language Center, and help teach them literacy and civics so that they are able to pass their citizenship exam.

Mary Ellen Ryder Linguistics Lab

The Mary Ellen Ryder Linguistics Lab offers students with internship and employment opportunities on a wide variety of projects — from collaborating with faculty on research and scholarship to working on community outreach projects, students gain research and project management skills helpful for future employment and graduate studies.

English Language Support Programs

Linguistics students help multilingual Boise State University students through one-on-one tutoring in English writing and speaking.

Students who have successfully completed our introductory course, LING 305, are eligible to serve as a Learning Assistant for the course. In addition to attending class, Learning Assistants hold special tutorials and review sessions, and attend weekly professional development meetings and workshops.
