Teaching Philosophy

“Only connect" is the theme that underlies the theory and practice of my teaching. Like E.M. Forster’s Margaret in Howard’s End, I model and encourage students to connect “the prose and the passion." Reading, interpreting, and expressing our ideas—face to face and on the page—facilitates our growth as self-aware, independent thinkers who are eager to engage with a complex world. My foremost task is to give students in my classroom the tools that will allow them to enter diverse discourses, but equipping students as critical readers and writers is not enough. Students must connect the prosaic skills with a passion for exploring the relationships of text and context, of expression and reception, of word and self. I want my students to find connections among disciplines and to test the value of theoretical frameworks, to discover that these are not abstract theories, but standpoints to help us connect with others and understand our world. My overall goal is to awaken, encourage, and challenge students’ vision, to share the excitement of the illuminations that come with being an engaged critical thinker responding to one’s world—whether reading a page, a cinema screen, or a culture.
