emphasis areas in the m.a. in english

There are two (2) areas of emphasis in the M.A. in English: literature, , and rhetoric and composition. Students may choose their emphasis according to their goals and course work taken. Tentative courses for two-year planning are as follows:

Boise State University offers degrees in the English Department other than the M.A. in English. These degrees are the Master of Arts in Technical Communication and the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. If you are interested in these degrees, please visit their websites, as they are separate entities from the M.A. in English.

graduate assistantships

Approximately ten Teaching Assistantships will be awarded for 2010-2011, each with a stipend of at least $10,400, plus a waiver of tuition and fees.

Teaching assistants’ responsibilities: three courses of freshman composition per year, starting with one course in the first semester. Teaching assistants receive intensive training in teaching freshman composition, and work with a faculty mentor as well as peers in the teaching assistantship program.

Writing Center assistant’s responsibilities: writing across the curriculum work, individual consultations with writers, mentoring new consultants, and helping the Writing Center Director with administrative duties, and other duties as assigned.

graduate residential scholars program

Participants in Graduate Residential Scholars Program live in an on-campus residential community of graduate students representing diverse backgrounds and disciplinary interests. Each scholar must first be awarded a graduate assistantship from their program; the total award of the assistantship and the GRSP award includes a stipend, full waiver of tuition and fees, and free housing in the new and fully furnished University Park apartments.

Approximately ten GRSP awards will be made to new 2010-2011 graduate students from programs throughout the campus. Applications – including both the full Teaching Assistantship Application and the separate GRSP application – from students who wish to be considered must be in the hands of the Director of the M.A. in English by January 15.
