checklist of admission requirements

  • A Bachelor of Arts in English. Applicants without a bachelor’s degree in English are required to have a strong background in the field. They should discuss their qualifications with the Director of the program.
  • A GPA of at least 3.0 for the last sixty semester credit hours of undergraduate work.
  • Scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), sent to the Graduate Admissions Office. The applicant must score at least 500 on the Verbal Section of the GRE. Scores on sections other than the Verbal Section are for information purposes only.
  • An essay of from five hundred to seven hundred words explaining the applicant’s goals in pursuing graduate study in English, sent directly to the Director of  the M.A. in English.
  • A writing sample of 8 to 10 pages, preferably academic writing completed within the past two years. For students who completed their undergraduate work more than one year before their application, professional writing of similar length, such as, but not limited to a grant proposal, a newsletter, or a business report may be submitted to fulfill this requirement. The applicant’s writing sample must be accompanied by a brief statement of the context for which the writing was done. These materials must be sent directly to the Director of  the M.A. in English.
  • Three letters of recommendation from people who know the applicant’s academic work, sent directly to the Director of  the M.A. in English.
  • Applicants must also meet general Graduate College requirements. To begin the process, fill out an application form available online or in hard copy in the Boise State University Graduate Catalog and request official transcripts from all institutions previously attended to be sent to the Graduate Admissions Office, MS-1110, Boise State University, Boise, ID 83725.

deadlines

These deadlines are consistent every year.

  • January 15 - deadline for all application material to be considered for a Teaching Assistantship for the Fall Semester.
  • April 15 - deadline for all application material to be admitted into the MA in English program for the Fall Semester. This is for applicants not applying for a Teaching Assistantship.
  • October 15 - deadline for all application material to be admitted into the MA in English program for the Spring Semester.

graduate assistantships

Approximately ten Teaching Assistantships and one Writing Center Assistantship will be awarded for 2008-2009, each with a stipend of at least $9,660, plus a waiver of tuition and fees.

Teaching assistants’ responsibilities: three courses of freshman composition per year, starting with one course in the first semester. Teaching assistants receive intensive training in teaching freshman composition, and work with a faculty mentor as well as peers in the teaching assistantship program.

Writing Center assistant’s responsibilities: writing across the curriculum work, individual consultations with writers, mentoring new consultants, and helping the Writing Center Director with administrative duties, and other duties as assigned.

Deadline is January 15 to apply to the graduate assistantship meet these requirements.

graduate residential scholars program

Participants in Graduate Residential Scholars Program live in an on-campus residential community of graduate students representing diverse backgrounds and disciplinary interests. Each scholar must first be awarded a graduate assistantship from their program; the total award of the assistantship and the GRSP award includes a stipend, full waiver of tuition and fees, and free housing in the new and fully furnished University Park apartments.

Approximately ten GRSP awards will be made to new 2008-2009 graduate students from programs throughout the campus. Applications – including both the full Teaching Assistantship Application and the separate GRSP application – from students who wish to be considered must be in the hands of the Director of the M.A. in English by January 15.

To apply to the graduate residential scholars program meet the requirements listed on the Graduate College website as well as meet the English Department deadline of January 15 for ALL materials for admission and assistantship to be submitted.
