There are classes and other resources located all over the city. Many of these programs are offered through the University for students only. Others are free for anyone in the community. And for people who need more help, there are other programs that charge tuiton for intensive English classes. This page lists information for many of these programs. These courses are designed to help nonnative English speakers prepare for English 101 at Boise State.Admission to Boise State is required to enroll.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

This program is designed for speakers whose first language is not English. Courses range in difficulty from very basic to advanced. Practical application of English usage is designed to improve reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Tutoring is also available in addition to regular classroom and computer lab instruction.

Intensive English Program (IPO / IEP)

This program is designed for international students planning to attend Boise State and who want to improve their English. Designed to prepare students for the TOEFL language exam  The cost is $2,040.00 for an eight-week session, and $3,750.00 for a sixteen-week session.

This school is dedicated to the acquisition and mastery of second and third languages. Sendero also offers free ESL classes to nonnative English speakers.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

This program provides training for adults who do not have a high school diploma. Focus is given to passing the GED test. Areas of Instruction Include: English, Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.

High School Equivalency Program

This program is designed for migrants, seasonal farm workers or their children. Instruction is focused on Literature, Writing, Science, Math, Social Studies, and American Government. General purpose of this course is to pass the GED test.

Job Employment Training (JET)

This federally funded vocational program requires that the participant have a Social Security Number and be financially responsible for a minor child. Participants must also meet income requirements. Program requires an Intermediate to High Intermediate English proficiency.Specific training includes Office Skills and Book Keeping.

College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP)

This federally funded program provides support to migrant or seasonal farmworkers and their children to attend college. CAMP provides financial support, counseling, tutoring, and mentoring to ensure success in school.

Student Success

This program is designed for at-risk students who need academic assistance. This program offers counceling, advising, and small group tutoring for various courses such as Math, Science, and English (including English 121, 122, and 123). English Language Learners may qualify for special services and tutoring through the Student Success Program.

Internship Tutoring  Services

This program is provided through the English Department at Boise State. Interns receive credit for tutoring nonnative English speakers in English or in other course material at Boise State. Intenships may include tutoring Boise State students or other qualifying members in the community. Internships require admission to Boise State and a recomendation from a linguistics faculty member or an A or B in Linguistics 305.
