The Division of Extended Studies connects the resources of Boise State University with individuals, organizations and communities to maximize educational opportunity. Responsive and enterprising, the Division partners with the University’s academic colleges to extend access to academic, professional development and personal enrichment opportunities. The Division accommodates a wide range of learners and their circumstances by developing programs that feature alternative formats and locations.

Extended Studies Programs Overview

 

Other Campus Sites

For the convenience of our students who live or work outside Boise, our other campus sites offer many academic courses in convenient locations. Courses are taught by Boise State faculty and meet all Boise State academic requirements. Our other site offerings include required courses for associate degrees, additional undergraduate courses and workshops. Some of these locations serve as receiving sites for Knowledge Network, a series of interactive, televised classes broadcast from the Boise campus. Advising, registration, and book sales are available at most other campus sites.

Distance Education

Are you the kind of student who is highly motivated, works well independently, and can structure your course work around your other commitments? These courses, presented in a variety of distance delivery methods, may be for you. They are offered by distance learning network, public and cable television, public radio, and the Internet. In addition, we offer two master’s degree programs--one in Instructional and Performance and Technology, the other in Educational Technology.

Weekend University

Is your weekday schedule so busy you don’t have time for school? Take a class on the weekend! Our weekend courses are designed with you in mind. These courses are offered on Friday evenings, on Saturday and on Sunday afternoons. They will give you greater flexibility in your schedule – you can have time for your family, job, recreation, personal interests AND school. These are regular high-quality Boise State courses and are taught by Boise State faculty. Weekend offerings include condensed workshops, under-graduate core classes and graduate programs.

Boise State AfterWork

The AfterWork program at Boise State University enables working adults to complete a bachelors degree in the evening and on weekends. All required classes in the major will be offered on a rotating basis, at least once every 2 years.

The Bachelor Degree programs available are:

• General Business Management,
• Health Science Studies and
• Information Technology Management.

Summer Program

Many Boise State students have more time in the summer to take classes. Our flexible schedule makes it easy for you. Courses are offered in 3-week sessions, 5-week sessions, 8-week sessions, and one 10-week session. You can take undergraduate, graduate, or noncredit courses, plus a variety of 2-day workshops.

Our services to students are available throughout the summer.

The Boise State Summer Schedule is available to students in January.

Special areas of emphasis for Summer have been:

   • The Boise State Downtown Workshops

Special summer offerings for teachers include:
   • In-Service Courses for Idaho teachers

Special Programs

Are you interested in learning about something new and different for you? Do you need a 1- or 2-credit course to complete your schedule? Look through our Workshops and see what appeals to you. These are offered at varying times, including evenings and/or intensive weekends and cover a wide range of topics and skills.

The Professional Education Courses for Teachers (In-service) offer a variety of training opportunities for Idaho teachers and teacher aides. They are offered during the Summer, Fall and Spring.

Boise State University has established an office of Corporate Relations to work with the many corporations and organizations in the Treasure Valley. Our goal is to assist corporations and other organizations in providing educational opportunities for their staffs. We do this by offering Boise State courses and/or services at the company site. We also can work together to create an academic program that satisfies the specific corporate training needs.

Boise State also offers a variety of graduate programs through Extended Studies:

Noncredit Courses

Boise State University is known for offering real education for the real world, which means we offer noncredit courses as well as credit courses. Whatever your interests, whatever your profession, you’re sure to find a non-credit course that fits your needs. Learn about computers, job training skills, business tools, management and professional skills, or a foreign language. You can also learn about personal finances, music and art. There are no applications, no waiting, but lots of learning available in these courses every term.

Concurrent Enrollment for High School Students

Boise State’s Concurrent Enrollment program allows high school junior and senior students to enroll in courses for both high school and college credit. Accumulating college credit while in high school can accelerate a student’s degree completion and result in cost savings. If you want to get a jump start with your college career, you have the option of taking pre-approved courses at your high school for a low $30 per credit fee.

Osher Institute: Programs for Adult Learners

At the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) –formerly known as Renaissance Institute– adult learners expand their intellectual horizons and enrich their lives. We offer you the opportunity to take short-term seminars, to attend a special topics lecture series, and to share with one another.

Center for Professional Development

The new Boise State Center for Professional Development offers education and training programs for engineering, business, public administration and health care professionals. As the largest higher education institution in Idaho, our goal is to provide open enrollment and customized professional development training programs designed to meet specific needs of organizations, corporations and government agencies.

Our focus is on busy professionals who need new skills but have precious little time to get them. Companies, organizations, agencies, and individuals tell us what they need, and we do the work. In return, they receive cutting-edge training where and when they want it--tailored JUST FOR YOU.
