Boise State's winter Intersession is being offered during the 2011-12 financial aid year between December 19 and January 15. If you are a financial aid recipient interested in picking up a few credits during the Intersession, there are financial aid details you should understand.
For financial aid purposes, the Intersession will be considered part of Spring Semester 2012 even though student fees for intersession credits are charged in addition to the regular spring fees. However, students with a Gem or WUE scholarship must be enrolled in 12 or more credits during the standard spring semester time period (intersession is excluded).
An Intersession student's...
Spring financial aid "Cost of Attendance" or budget will be increased after the Intersession has begun. This adjustment may make you more eligible for more aid such as loans. You will be notified by email when your budget has been increased and you may request additional aid by replying to that email message. Intersession students will be automatically identified based on your class registration information.
Intersession credits will count towards the spring semester credit load for financial aid eligibility IF the class is passed. If you receive a grade of "F," "W," "I," "NR," "CW," or "IP" these credits will be excluded from spring semester aid eligibility.
Financial aid related to your intersession attendance will be disbursed no earlier than January 10, 2012 when the first spring semester disbursements begin.
Fees are due by December 15, 2011. If you have enough spring financial aid to cover BOTH the Intersession and spring semester fees, you will not be charged a late fee.
Spring semester financial aid at another university or college may be negatively impacted if you receive Intersession financial aid from Boise State. A student may receive a Pell Grant from only one school during each semester and the Intersession is considered part of spring semester.
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) status after the fall semester will determine financial aid eligibility for the Intersession and spring semester. The SAP review occurs after fall grades become official. SAP statuses will be finalized on or about January 11th, which is after Intersession classes have begun. Review the SAP Policy to determine if you may encounter difficulties with any of the standards.
Existing SAP Holds should be carefully reviewed before registering for Intersession credits unless you are willing to pay for these credits without financial aid assistance. For example, if you have an existing HOLD warning you that your credit completion rate is less than 75%, you may become ineligible for spring financial aid if you are still below the 75% standard after the fall semester SAP review has occurred in January, but you may have already incurred the charges for the Intersession credits.
Non-degree seeking status, or dismissal from Boise State, after fall semester grades become official in January will make the student ineligible for financial aid for the Intersession credits, as well as spring semester.
Eligibility for spring financial aid may be negatively impacted if an intersession classes is dropped. Intersession is considered a spring semester "module" for federal financial aid. Dropping the intersession module may be considered a complete withdrawal from spring semester. If prompted, at the time of dropping the intersession class, to answer the question " Do you intend to return later in the term?" the question relates to the spring term which is both the standard spring semester and intersession.
Spring financial aid award may be negatively impacted if you are enrolled only for Intersession and Spring Semester. Very few students will be impacted by this because your Cost of Attendance/Budget will also be increased.
Further explanation:
The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount used to calculate your spring financial aid will likely increase when the month for Intersession is added to your Cost of Attendance.
This higher EFC may negatively impact the amount of "need-based aid" such as work-study, subsidized loan, Perkins loan and SEOG/LEAP/SLEAP grants.
If you are a Pell Grant recipient, the amount of Pell Grant will be unaffected by this calculation
For example:
A student enrolled for Spring Semester Only will have a pro-rated EFC for 4 months used when financial aid is calculated for the semester.
In comparison, a student enrolled for Intersession and Spring Semester Only will have a pro-rated EFC for 5 months used when financial aid is calculated for the Intersession/Spring Semester.
