Changes in federal regulations for 2011-2012 will impact Pell Grant eligibility. Please pay particular attention to the information on repeating courses and Pell Grant eligibility.
The amount of Pell Grant that you are eligible to receive is based on the number of financial aid eligible* credits in which you enroll and attend. These grant amounts are reduced when your credit load is less than 12 credits. You will be responsible for repayments resulting from any decrease to your previously disbursed Pell Grants.
Avoid an unexpected balance on your account by being aware of the following policies:
1. Enrollment adjustments between now & January 30 at 11:59 p.m. -- the spring census date.
Daily Pell Grant adjustments are occurring now through January 31st (the first business day after enrollment is frozen) based on the number of financial aid eligible* credits in which you enroll for spring semester 2012. The initial Pell Grant award represented enrollment in 12 or more credits.
If you add or drop a class after your Pell Grant has disbursed, your student account will reflect any resulting changes to your Pell Grant award within three business days.
Following the steps below will help you avoid receiving a late fee on temporary unpaid balances created by a Pell Grant reduction.
Try to add and drop classes during the same session on BroncoWeb, if possible.
Whenever possible, ADD a class before you drop another class. (Dropping a class may cause your Pell Grant to decrease.)
Frequently students are refunded the student fees for a dropped class and this occurs before the Pell Grant has been recalculated. Before you spend the refund, watch BroncoWeb for three business days after you finalize your schedule to see if you need to repay some Pell Grant funds or pay fees for newly added classes.
2. Your Pell Grant enrollment is frozen on January 30th at 11:59 p.m. – the spring semester census date.
Any classes added after January 30th will be excluded from determining your Pell Grant eligibility.
This applies to internships, workshops, and other classes, even if the University allows you to add these credits after January 30th.
3. Attendance in all classes.
Your Pell Grant awards are based on the assumption that you attend all of your enrolled classes. Pell Grant amounts are adjusted for non-attendance in courses.
Your Pell Grant award will be recalculated and reduced if you drop below the financial aid eligible* credits you had in place on January 30th for situations such as:
* You drop a class or workshop before it starts
* You drop without a "W" * You drop with a "W" and your attendance cannot be documented * You do not attend a class * Your professor is unable to document your attendance in a class * You receive an "F" and your professor reports that you never attended
Be aware of your status if you enroll in sequenced classes within the same semester. If passing a class is required to continue in the sequence, your financial aid credit load will be reduced if you fail to meet the prerequisites for the next class and are administratively dropped from the class. Many of these classes have a "conditional” registration that requires a student to seek and to input permission numbers by a specific deadline for the later classes in the sequence.
Your student account on BroncoWeb will reflect any grant reduction that occurs for these reasons.
* Financial aid eligible credits have been redefined by the U.S. Congress starting in 2011-12. A student can be paid on a repeated class IF the class was never previously passed. A student can also be paid for repeating a previously passed course as long it is the firstrepeat of the course. More details can be found in the Boise State Financial Aid Handbook or in the web site Timely Tip "Repeated credits – federal financial aid change." Financial aid eligible credits also determine your eligibility for federal student loans, work-study, and scholarships.
