Q: Who may use Counseling Services?
A: All services are available to all Boise State students.

Q: What is counseling?

A:     - Counseling is talking with a professional who cares.
- Counseling is a confidential process geared toward resolving every day issues related to your personal and academic success.
- Counseling helps you discuss your concerns and clarify the kind of changes that might improve your situation.
- Counseling provides a place to feel connected and find support.
- Counseling helps you tap into your strengths and find resources to make things better.
- Counseling provides an opportunity to learn new skills.

Q: What concerns are addressed in counseling?

A:     - Concerns about classroom performance, procrastination, motivation, stress.
- Personal or family crises.
- Issues around beginning or ending a relationship, alcohol or other drugs.
- Conflicts with friends, roommates, spouse, children, or faculty members.
- Feeling isolated, lonely, homesick, stressed, sad.
- Wondering where you are headed in your education or career.
- Wanting to discuss gender, sexual orientation, race, or related issues.
- ...and many other personal, social, and academicreasons.

Q: Who are the counselors?
A: Licensed professional psychologists and counselors with many years of experience in the academic environment. Counseling services are also provided by third year graduate counseling students working under close supervision from the senior staff. Supervised paraprofessionals (peer educators) lead workshops as part of our outreach program.

Q: What can you expect when you come in to meet with a counselor?

A:    - You will be greeted by a staff member and asked to complete a brief, confidential form.
- A counselor will meet with you in his/her office where you can talk privately about anything you wish.
- You will work together to clarify your concerns and develop a plan to improve your situation.
- Depending on your needs, you may set up additional sessions to help you resolve your concerns.
- If you are scheduled to meet with one of our graduate students, you will be asked to sign release to record for supervisory purposes.

Q: What other services are offered through Counseling Services?

A:    - Workshops on topics like career development, test anxiety, stress management, and others.
- One credit classes (CD 297) on fears and phobias, depression, life after divorce, women and anger, fighting for your relationship, and others.
- Consultation on parenting or any other issue that effects you or your organization.
- Customized programs on team building, conflict resolution, or topics of interest to your group, organization, or class.
- Crisis intervention and referral.

Q: Where is Counseling Services and when is it open?
A: Counseling Services is located at Taylor Hall, B103. We are open between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday - Friday. Call 426-1601 or stop by to schedule an appointment.

Q: Is there a fee for Counseling Services?
A: Beginning the first day of classes, August 22, 2005, Counseling Services will be implementing a fee for service. There will no charge for the first counseling session; subsequent sessions will be charged at $10 each. There is a $10 fee for missed appointments and late cancellations.

Can I see a different counselor?
A: Yes. We want you to find the best match possible and sometimes this involves trying a different counselor from the first one you see.
