Fitness and Nutrition

Fitness and nutrition are major components to peak performance academically, professionally and in daily life. This site contains some of the best fitness and nutrition resources found on the web and in the Boise community.

Nutrition Consultation and Presentation Requests

A registered, licensed dietitian is available to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy upon referral by designated staff. Designated staff includes: Medical Services providers, Counseling and Wellness Services staff, Athletic Trainers or Rec Center, Women's Center and Housing staff.
Access Fee: $5 for full-time students (part-time students additional fees)
Where: Health & Wellness Center

Nutrition Q & A

Drop in nutritional advice is available by qualified staff. This is a great opportunity for you to ask questions, and learn more about healthy eating.

When: Thursdays, 4:15pm-5:15pm (excluding major holidays and university closings)
Where: Fitness Testing Room in the Student Recreation Center
Registration: Drop-in; no registration necessary.
Fee: None

In Fall 2004, Health, Wellness and Counseling Services partnered with Canteen Vending Services to offer healthy snack options in Boise State University vending machines. Healthy options are available in the right columns of all vending machines and are identified by a green leaf logo. Examples of snacks include: Guiltless Gourmet Spicy Black Bean Chips, Nutri-Grain Granola Bars, Nature Valley Chewy Trail Mixes, Fig Newtons and Beef Jerkey.

Some of the topics covered include fast food, vitamins, food supplements, diets, sports nutrition, children's nutrition, fiber and constipation, junk foods, food safety, food fallacies, drug-nutrient interactions, and more. Nutri-Facts is your free source for nutrition information on almost six thousand different foods. They have taken the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, and put it into a format that the average person can use. In fact, the format is much the same as what you see on the "Nutrition Facts" label that is shown on almost all food packages in your local supermarket.

Nutrition Explorations is a great site with fun and easy ways to teach and learn about nutrition.

Overeaters Anonymous (OA) offers a program of recovery from compulsive overeating. Whether you're new to working out, or a seasoned veteran, it's always good to know your current fitness level. Campus Recreation offers fitness testing at a great price! Assessments provide a great benchmark for further improvement and give each individual a complete picture or guide to his/her fitness level.

Fitness Assessments include the following:
- resting, maximum, and target heart rate
- heart rate
- blood pressure
- body composition
- muscular fitness
- cardio-respiratory endurance
- balance and flexibility measures

Resting, maximum and target heart rate, blood pressure and body composition assessments are also available, at low cost, for students and staff during monthly health screenings.

Campus Recreation facilities include gymnasiums, an outdoor center, a climbing gym, racquetball and squash courts, exercise rooms, indoor track, a lap pool, tennis courts, cardiovascular and strength equipment, recreation field, sand volleyball courts, and outdoor basketball courts. A wide variety of group exercise classes are available. It's a great place to workout and meet people.

Outdoor Program - offers a wide variety of services to the university community such as: adventure education instructional seminars and workshops, cooperative adventures, four season rental equipment, an outdoor reference library and general trip planning assistance.

Intramural Sports Program - offers over 22 team sporting activities throughout the year. It's a great way to workout, have fun and meet people.

Club Sports Program - offers different club sports opportunities at Boise State. Whether it is aikido or lacrosse, getting involved is easy. Membership fees and practice schedules are all on-line.
