Dr. Vincent Serio

Name: Dr. Vincent Serio
Degree: MD
Job Title: Medical Services Director

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: I oversee the medical care that you receive at the Health & Wellness Center. I see patients, supervise the other clinicians that you see here, and serve as your liaison to the University administration for health care matters.

I am excited to work in the dynamic environment of college health where I can practice in my specialty of Family Medicine, and where there is an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to health care and health promotion. My goal is to make your medical visit to Health, Wellness and Counseling Services a smooth and quality experience.

My clinical interests include general adult medicine, reproductive health, and wilderness and travel medicine. I also perform a number of minor surgical procedures, including colposcopic evaluation of abnormal pap smears and cervical cryotherapy. I am board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. I graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1995, and completed my residency at the University of Washington-affiliated Family Medicine Residency of Idaho in 1998.


Barb Hagen

Job Title: Psychiatrist

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: Dr. Hagen graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine, and completed her residency in Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Hagen serves as a consultant to the staff of Health, Wellness and Counseling Services for mental health issues on campus. She is also the supervising physician for a University of Washington resident in psychiatry who sees patients at Health, Wellness and Counseling Services.

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: I strive to provide high quality medical care and education to each student. As a family practitioner, I am trained in and enjoy helping all age groups. I especially enjoy my work at Boise State University, where I address the unique health needs and concerns of students. I find it both challenging and rewarding in many ways.

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: I personally enjoy working in the university setting. My professional goal is to help students maintain their health so that they can enjoy their total academic experiences. I want them to be able to function well mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. I would like their academic experiences to be fulfilling, meaningful, memorable, healthy and FUN!

Sandra Hellman

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: A large part of my job is providing routine gynecological exams and contraception management to students with all types of insurance. I enjoy working with women's health and sexual health issues. My goal is to make the woman as comfortable as possible during the gyn exam and to involve her in the process of her sexual health. I also see male and female students for adult health issues from acute illnesses to management of stable chronic health problems. I enjoy the college community, because I feel students are in an excellent position to identify barriers for a healthy lifestyle and to partner to improve their health status.


Susan Jerome

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: It is my goal to provide high quality medical care and education to each client. Mental health is my primary, but not exclusive, focus at Student Health Services. I enjoy working with students of all ages and backgrounds.


Becky Elder

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: I provide general medical care to BSU students. My background is in family practice and neurology with special interest in headaches, migraines, and women’s health. I have had the opportunity to volunteer at medical clinics which serve the uninsured in our community and I have benefited from these experiences. This has made me very cost conscious and I strive to keep patients medical costs to a minimum. I enjoy working with students at BSU because of their enthusiasm and motivation to further their education. I want to promote healthy lifestyles and help students make positive changes in their lives.


Stephen Mucher

Job Title: Nursing Supervisor, Clinic Operations Manager

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: It is my responsibility to provide the support and resources our clinical staff requires to best serve the medical needs of our patients. I strive to assure that we supply the best quality and value for the services received and healthcare dollars spent. I am constantly looking at ways that we might gain efficiency and quality in our clinic operations.

I supervise the nursing staff and serve as a primary resource for our electronic medical records system. My nursing experience is in critical care with both adult and pediatric populations but the majority of my clinical time was spent in the Neonatal ICU.

I am fortunate to have this opportunity to utilize my clinical and nursing knowledge along with my business proficiencies. My goal is that the clinic provide the most appropriate services in the timeliest manner possible to give the best value to our students.

Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: As a nurse for almost 20 years, my main focus has always been to provide patients with the best healthcare I can. I work to educate patients to care for themselves with the best knowledge base possible for their specific needs. I believe patients are their own best advocate and need to be empowered to do so by their healthcare providers.


Lindsay Jensen

Job Title: Patient Medication Assistance Coordinator

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: I hope to help our students lead healthy lives both mentally and physically. I provide students assistance with the Patient Assistance Programs. These programs help students receive free medications for those who qualify and could not afford their medications otherwise. I am very excited to have the opportunity to help our students at Boise State.


Verla Wilson

Services Provided/Professional Philosophy: I graduated from the Academy Of Professional Careers. This is my first job as a Medical Assistant. I plan to utilize my current knowledge and skills in the health care field, as well as continue to learn from my patients in this position.
