Billboards painted by the Hopfgarten Sign Company at 8th & Jefferson. The top of the Pinney Theater is visible to the right. Behind the telephone pole in the center of the photograph is an advertisement for W.E. Pierce's real estate development, Ellis addition. Pierce Park with its artificial lake was developed to the west along what is now State St. in connection with the construction of the Interurban railway that connected Boise to Nampa and Caldwell.

"Charlie was quite a character. I know he used to come to the Pinney Theatre to practically all the shows. He had an infectious laugh. It was more of a cackle, but sometimes the audience would laugh more at him than they did at the show. He was well known around here and well liked, but that laugh of his was really something."

"The Columbia Theater was demolished in 1907 and was replaced by the Pinney Theater across Jefferson Street in 1908. And this theater was operated for many years by Mr. Walter Mendenhall and by his son, Roger Mendenhall. The Pinney Theater is now in the process of being demolished to be replaced by an automobile parking lot. Thus, Boise is again losing one of its valuable assets."

-Frederick C. Hummel, November 25, 1969
