"Well, one evening, I had to work a little longer than the rest. Most of them got off at seven. But, I had to work until nine. And, I wanted some of them to stay and wait until nine to go downtown and we could stay out a little later and they wouldn't do it and I was mad at them because they wouldn't wait for me. I had said to these other girls that wouldn't wait for me, 'Ok, I'll go downtown and I'll get me a boyfriend.' And, of course, Gowen Field was very popular then. This was during World War II and lots of soldiers, airmen on the streets. And this was not my natural nature and they knew I was just teasing them, you know. They said, 'Ok, you just do that.' And I said, 'Ok, I'll show you.' So I went downtown and I met these other girls and they said, 'Well, where's the boyfriend?' or something like that. And I said, 'Well, I just got here, give me a little time.' I turned around and a couple of fellows came down the street and we started talking and off we went. This other girl and I that got off at nine and I and the two airmen went on down the street. And they just couldn't believe it. That we did go down and pick up a boyfriend in no time at all. But, it was an interesting time."
