Clarence Darrow for the defense: Best remembered for his defense of biology teacher John Scopes in the 1925 "monkey trial" on the teaching of evolution, Darrow, in 1895, had won socialists friends for fighting to free the imprisoned activist Eugene Debs. Twelve years later the Statesman praised the attorney's "plain, old fashioned, easy, quiet manner " but noted that Darrow, when angry, had a megaphone voice.
