The rise of Northwest socialism coincided with the artistic career of Austrian-born cartoonist Joseph Keppler, publisher of Puck magazine. In 1886, soon after a bomb killed eight police officers in Chicago's Haymarket Square, Keppler mocked the overblown threat of labor violence in a cartoon entitled “The Big Boycott Wind-Bag.”
