What is the First Year Focus Program?

First Year Focus is a Living-Learning Community that allows you to enroll in three classes with other residents from your floor or residence hall:

UNIV 101: College Transitions (2 credits)
KinAct 163: Group exercise and fitness (1credit)
1 Foundational Studies Course that counts towards graduation requirements

There are two communities that comprise the First Year Focus: Towers and Chaffee.

Towers Hall
You and your three other suitemates are enrolled in these classes and share one common floor with 24 other students/classmates in Towers Hall.

Chaffee Hall
You and your roommate will be enrolled in these classes and all students participating will live in A-wing on the first floor of Chaffee Hall. This community is a little more spread out, but you have a roommate and neighbors throughout the hall that share your classes.

Why should I participate?

Living together and taking classes together creates so many opportunities to build meaningful relationships with students in class, making it easier to participate in class and getting involved in your learning. Students in these communities talk about the great friendships they have made and how much easier it is to study with other people from class. First Year Focus provides a great residence hall community that transfers into the classroom community.

How do I enroll for classes?

Once you are placed in your residence hall community, you are automatically enrolled in these three classes; the rest of your class schedule is built when you come to summer orientation.

What if the communities are full and I still want to participate?

These are popular community choices, so apply soon. If all spaces are filled, we will create a waiting list and contact students as spaces become available.

How do I apply for admission?
All Living-Learning Community students must first complete an on-line Housing application. Once complete, students must apply for admission by submitting 1) an essay outlining their interests in this living and learning community, and 2) a resume noting past involvement or employment. Faculty review admission materials and make determinations based on information provided. The process is competitive so students are encouraged to place appropriate time and effort in submitting materials. For more information, please see admissions information on our website.

Who can participate?
First year students; open to all majors

We understand that there are a number of transitions that first year students experience coming from high school to college. The First Year Focus Program is constructed with the needs of traditional first year students in mind.

We launched our first community of this type during fall semester of 2008 with 24 students living on one floor in Towers Hall. It was so successful that we expanded the program to Chaffee Hall.

Living and learning together provides additional opportunities to study together and build relationships in and out of the classroom.
