Volunteer
Profile: The date is Oct. 17 and the Broncos are taking on the University
of Hawaii at Bronco Stadium. At halftime, the Broncos are
ahead 10 to 7 and there is an energy in the air, a sense
that we are about to make a breakthrough. Suddenly, something completely unexpected
happens. Mark
Dunkley,
with several other volunteers, hand-carries a sleek Steinway
piano out to the 50-yard line. The performance of “Rhapsody
in Blue,” played on a Blue Steinway on our beloved blue turf, kicks off Boise
State’s All-Steinway initiative.
As an advisory board member for the College of Arts and Sciences, Dunkley is helping to raise $2.3 million for the purchase of 56 elegant Steinway pianos, not only for performance but also for practice and instruction. This will make Boise State one of only 63 all-Steinway schools in the nation and will put the music department in the company of schools like Yale and Juilliard. Dunkley and his wife, Karen, are the parents of five daughters and the grandparents of two. He owns and runs Dunkley Music and also volunteers as a board member for Boise Music Week, Opera Idaho, the Boise Philharmonic Association and National Association of Music Merchants. He is an active volunteer in his church and served a mission to Taiwan, where he learned to speak Mandarin Chinese.
Employee Giving Campaign: The employee giving campaign will wrap up at the end of 2008. This year’s campaign saw a two-fold increase in the number of employees who participated, with an overall 21 percent participation rate as of the beginning of December. The campus unit with the highest participation rate among its faculty and staff will be invited to a special recognition event held in the Stueckle Sky Center in late January or early February.
Alumni Legacy Scholarship: Applications are due Feb. 16 for this four-year, renewable scholarship available to a relative of a Boise State alumna or alumnus. The scholarship amount is equal to in-state fees during the fall and spring semesters. The application form must be completed and returned (along with a copy of the applicant’s academic transcript) to: Boise State Alumni Association c/o Alumni Legacy Scholarship Committee, 1910 University Drive, Boise, ID 83725-1035.
Bronco Athletic Association: The BAA appreciates all its supporters. Gift opportunities are available in several areas, including annual memberships, athletic scholarship endowments, capital projects, sports enhancements and planned giving.
