- Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) This Federal law protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.
- Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPAA) This law combats waste, fraud, and abuse in health insurance and health care delivery and improve access to long-term care services and coverage. FERPA also simplifies and standardizes administration of health insurance and protects the privacy of individual medical information.
- Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLB) The Financial Modernization Act of 1999, also known as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, includes privacy provisions to protect consumer information held by financial institutions. In 2003, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) confirmed that higher education institutions are considered financial institutions under this federal law. The Safeguards Rule of the GLB Act requires financial institutions to have a security plan and have policies to protect confidentiality and integrity of personal information.
- USA Patriot Act This controversial legislation was passed to enhance domestic security against terrorism. Sections of the act enhanced surveillance procedures, international money laundering, intelligence gathering activities, as well as removing obstacles to investigating terrorism. Border protection and strengthening the criminal laws were also addressed.
- Computer Fraud and Abuse Act If someone accesses a Federal or U. S. financial institution computer(s) without authorization or exceeds authorized access can be prosecuted under this act.
- The Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) The legislation implements two 1996 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) treaties. Additionally, the DMCA covers electronic and online copyrights for intellectual property such as digital presentations, music, art, images, and designs. This act enhances the older copyright laws, bringing them into the modern era of computers, networks, and digital information.
- The Electronic Communications Privacy Act This legislation strengthens the privacy protections for law enforcement surveillance. Section 119 of the US Code Title 18 Part 1 increases standards for government access to wireless telephones, trap-and-trace of electronic communications, and pen registers. It requires warrants for seizure of e-mail, higher approvals for interceptions of network traffic and raises the penalties for illegally intercepted communications.

- Stored Electronic Communications Law Section 121 of the US Code Title 18 Part 1 strengthens the protections for stored communications and transactional records from law enforcement seizure or surveillance.
