The International Programs Office (IP0) offers two options
for short term programs for students wanting to spend less than a semester
abroad--embedded programs and short courses. IPO handles administrative
aspects and assists faculty to develop these programs.
An embedded program refers to a regular academic course taught on the
home campus that includes a short international experience. The international
experience can take place prior to or just after the semester or during
spring break. To participate in the international experience, students
must be enrolled in the course.
Short courses are stand-alone international academic experiences that
operate for less than the standard academic term but that are established
as regular university courses. These programs may be from 1-6 weeks in
duration.
Criteria to consider when developing a program proposal should include:
• Sustainability-- can the program be done more
than one time?
• Student appeal-is there enough potential appeal
to generate sufficient applicants?
• Does the program have potential to lead to
connections to a university in another country that could eventually allow
faculty or student exchanges to develop?
• Does the program fit into (or lead into) the
college or department's strategic plan especially with regard to efforts
to promote internationalization of the campus and curriculum?
