Acknowledgments

The creation of Melville's Marginalia Online has been made possible by a Research Initiation Grant from Boise State University, and by support from the Boise State University College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of English. A 2008 grant from the Idaho Humanities Council is supporting completion of the project's "Online Catalog" at Boise State University, and a 2008 Digital Humanities Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities is helping to develop the project's operations at Saint Joseph's University.

The project has also benefited by timely cooperation and expert guidance from the staffs of Houghton Library, of the New York Public Library's Manuscripts and Archives Division, and of the Berkshire Athenaeum.

Recovery of erased marginalia in Herman Melville's copy of Thomas Beale's The Natural History of the Sperm Whale was made possible by support from both the William Reese Company of New Haven, Connecticut, and from Boise State University, and by technical services facilitated by Houghton Library and performed at Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum.

Kind permission has been granted by the University of Virginia Library to reproduce text digitized at the library's Electronic Text Center.

The project gratefully acknowledges private gifts from the following individuals:

  • Boise State University Professor of English Emeritus James Maguire and Betty Maguire, for support related to the editing and proofing of Melville's marginalia in William Cullen Bryant's Poems (Sealts No. 94).
