String students pursuing music degrees at BSU follow a curriculum which includes private lessons on their major instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass), classes in pedagogy and repertoire, and performance experience as a soloist, chamber musician, and member of the University Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. In addition, the Boise Chamber Music Society and Boise Philharmonic, in conjunction with the Department of Music, sponsor concerts and masterclasses given by world-renowned artists and ensembles. Recent guests on campus have been the Guarneri Quartet, the Peabody Trio, the Lark Quartet, the American Chamber Players, the Cassatt Quartet, and the Mozarteum Players.
Individual artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Glen Dicterow, Charles Castleman, and Rachel Barton are indicative of an impressive international roster of talent made available to our students. These opportunities complete the string major's total experience and provide a stimulating and cosmopolitan environment upon which to develop as a performer.
String graduates at Boise State University have gone on to lead productive musical lives as public school educators in Idaho and the northwest, as symphony performers throughout the U.S., chamber musicians, and university teachers.
String students have successfully captured national prizes in major string competitions such as the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Chamber Music Competition and the American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition.
