Dr. David Mathie
is a Professor of Music at Boise State University, where his major teaching areas are trombone, euphonium, and instrumental music education. In the year 2000 he was the finalist for the Outstanding Teacher Award for the entire University, and has served as the Associate Chair of the department. Before joining the faculty at Boise State he was an Assistant Professor of Music at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, where he taught classes in music education, band, and trombone for four years. In addition to his university experience, Dr. Mathie taught in the public schools of Connecticut and New York, and was a member of the trombone faculty at the National Music Camp, Interlochen, for eight summers. Dr. Mathie holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Ithaca College, a Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance from the Juilliard School of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trombone Performance and Music Education from the University of Georgia. His doctoral dissertation was on the twentieth-century use of the alto trombone.
As a performer, Dr. Mathie was the principal trombonist in the Juilliard Symphony, and played with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra for three years as an extra on trombone and euphonium. He was also the principal trombonist in the Stamford Symphony, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, and Connecticut Symphony, and assistant principal trombonist with the Hartford Symphony. He is now the second trombonist in the Boise Philharmonic and trombonist with the Boise State University Faculty Brass Quintet. As a free-lance player in New York City and other areas, he worked with such performers as Tony Bennett, Rich Little, Beverly Sills, Luciano Pavarotti, Red Skelton, Frankie Valle, Carol Channing, Mannheim Steamroller, and the Temptations. His trombone studies have been with Per Brevig (Metropolitan Opera and the Juilliard School), Glenn Dodson (Philadelphia Orchestra), and Philip Jameson (the University of Georgia).
Former students of Dr. Mathie are now playing trombone in the Hartford, CT, Tacoma, WA, Louisville, KY symphonies and the Boise Philharmonic, and have held first chair positions in the Connecticut and Idaho All-State organizations and the Interlochen Center for the Arts. They have majored in music as undergraduates at the Eastman School of Music, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Northwestern University, New England Conservatory of Music, University of Kansas, the State Universities of New York at Potsdam (Crane School of Music) and Fredonia, University of Oregon, University of Washington and Boise State University. Dr. Mathie’s trombone and euphonium graduates of BSU have gone on to graduate school at the Manhattan School of Music, University of Illinois, University of North Texas, Rutgers University and University of Akron. At Boise State University, the BSU Trombone Choir is one of the most active performing groups on campus, and was chosen to perform at the MENC All-Northwest conference in February, 2003.
Dr. Mathie has published numerous articles in the International Trombone Association Journal, the International Horn Society Journal, the Kansas Music Review, the Idaho Music Notes, and the Instrumentalist, has presented research papers and performed at many International Trombone Association conferences, and served on the Research Committee of the International Trombone Association and review board for the On-Line Trombone Journal. In addition to his regular cd and literature reviews in the International Trombone Association Journal, his numerous arrangements for trombone choir and brass ensembles are published by Alessi Publications in New York, Balquhidder Music in Los Angeles, and Kagarice Brass Editions, and have been performed throughout this country and Europe. His wife Diane is a music teacher in the Boise public schools and plays trumpet with the Boise Philharmonic, along with their son Stephen on cello.
Dr. Mathie plays both Bach and Edwards tenor trombones, a Conn alto trombone, and a Willson euphonium.
