English professor Tom Trusky, left, helps undergraduate Carissa Lentz and graduate student Timothy Davis read the future with the help of a large animal bone. The event was part of a new summer course called Before the Book, which explores ancient writing methods and materials. Chinese oracle bones involved a priest inking and carving a question into one side of an animal’s shoulder blade. After cracking the bone with a hot metal rod, the priest would interpret the cracks and write the answer on the other side. Above, Davis asks if he will graduate in December.

Master of Fine Arts candidate Arin Lindstrom removes objects from her installation, “A Space Full of Emptiness” in the Fine Arts building on Monday. The piece incorporates ceramic fragments and mirrors embedded in piles of empty buckwheat hulls. Lindstrom’s goal is to have viewers investigate the objects after their initial interpretation, as the objects often are not what they first seem to be. The installation was created for faculty review as part of the requirements for Lindstrom’s MFA degree.

Josh Armstrong is tutored by Bert Martin Monday in the Math Learning Center (MLC), a progressive, effective option for students hoping to fulfill basic math requirements at Boise State. In the first semester of the 2008-2009 academic year, pass rates for MLC students in Math 108 almost doubled from the previous fall semester. Interim director Tara Sheehan credits the jump to implementation of learning models that build confidence in class and encourage students to take advantage of peer tutors in an informal setting. The curriculum is taught and tested mostly on computers, but lab time and study sessions help students connect to the process and appreciate the commitment of faculty to help them succeed.

Boise State students from Matthew Hansen’s English classes worked with fourth, fifth and sixth graders at Lowell Elementary School, teaching them about Shakespeare, designing costumes, sets and rehearsing a shortened version of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” The young students recently performed before an audience of parents, teachers and their peers. Hansen’s English classes are among 64 classes offered at Boise State this spring that include a service-learning component. Boise State faculty integrate service-learning into their courses, making community involvement an essential part of the curriculum. Hansen’s project encourages students to explore the cultural importance of Shakespeare and to challenge assumptions that Shakespeare is a commodity reserved for cultural elites. Helping elementary students to learn, understand, and perform Shakespeare is a way to empower them, enhance their vocabulary, confidence and teamwork skills.

Boise State students and faculty from the College of Engineering are currently participating in NASA’s Microgravity University program in Houston, Texas, which allows them to experience simulated Martian, lunar and zero gravity. Above, team leader Dan Isla practices somersaults with distinguished educator in residence and former NASA astronaut Barbara Morgan. During two flights on a specially outfitted Boeing 727 (G-Force One) the team collected data about possible lunar surface traction concepts. The research will be applied to the design of rovers that will contribute to NASA’s vision of returning to the moon and establishing a permanent platform for exploring far beyond. Students in engineering faculty member Carol Sevier’s Engineering 120 class spent some time at Fort Boise Community Center on Tuesday in an effort to better understand the needs of people who have physical disabilities, and to experience first-hand some of the challenges they face. Sevier is teaching a service-learning component as part of her class. The students will work in teams to design devices that make a task easier for a person with a physical impairment. Sevier’s class is one of 64 service-learning classes this spring that involve 1,010 students. Service-learning fosters active citizenship and enhances learning through academically-based community service. Every college at Boise State offers courses with service-learning components.

The Morrison Center stage was transformed by the magic of the Department of Theatre Arts last weekend with its successful production of “Pippin.” The popular musical is based on the story of the son of Charlemagne, who tries to find his purpose in life through a series of adventures. Through war, revolution, religion and love, Pippin searches for meaning — only to find that his purpose may not be as grand as he thought.
