‘Tres Vidas’
“Tres Vidas,” a new chamber music theatre work that celebrates three significant Latin and South American women, will be performed at 7 p.m. March 17 in the Student Union Special Events Center at Boise State University. The performance is part of the Global Expressions Series and Women’s History Month. Tickets are $10 general, $5 Boise State students, employees, alumni, seniors and students 17 and younger through Select-a-Seat.
“Tres Vidas” will be performed by the Core Ensemble — Tahirah Whittington, cello, Hugh Hinton, piano, and Michael Parola, percussion — and actress Georgina Corbo. The work honors the life, times and work of painter Frida Kahlo of Mexico, peasant activist Rufina Amaya of El Salvador and poet Alfonsina Storni of Argentina. With storylines including Kahlo’s dramatic and passionate relationship with Diego Rivera, Amaya’s astounding survival of the massacre at El Mozote and Storni’s lifelong challenges as Argentina’s first great feminist poet, “Tres Vidas” presents dramatic situations to audiences.
The piece was written by Chilean poet and writer Marjorie Agosin. Corbo offers powerful portrayals of each woman and includes traditional Mexican folk songs as well as Argentinian music. Additional music by Astor Piazzolla, Orlando Garcia, Pablo Ortiz, Alice Gomez, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Michael DeMurga and Osvaldo Golijov round out the musical score.
Since its inception in 1993, the Core Ensemble has toured nationally to every region of the United States and internationally to England, Russia, the Ukraine, Australia and the British Virgin Islands. The ensemble was the recipient of the 2000 Eugene McDermott Award for Excellence in the Arts, awarded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has received support from numerous foundations.
Corbo’s TV appearances include “Law and Order” and “New York Undercover.” She appeared in the movie “It’s Always Something” and has performed in both on- and off-Broadway productions.
