Wellness Services Offers Various Health-Related Workshops,

Seminars and Screenings

Following are some of the upcoming on-campus programs offered by or affiliated with Boise State Wellness Services; Campus Recreation; and/or the Training and Development division of Human Resource Services:

Aromatherapy Workshop — 6:30-8:30 p.m. today, Bishop Barnwell Room, Student Union. Plants have been a major source of medicine and healing practices for centuries. This workshop led by instructor Jennifer Aumeier will educate participants on the powerful connection between aromatherapy and well-being. Individuals will explore aromatherapy applications for their health care regimen. Skin care, reduction of pain and inflammation by the use of compresses and baths and balancing of emotional states through inhalation of aromatherapy will be discussed.  Hands-on experience will involve creating a balancing blend for personal use. Mind/Body Connection, Mysteries Revealed — 11 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Student Recreation Center. If you are curious about the mind/body connection, this workshop, led by Christina Berg, health promotion director for Wellness Services, is for you.  Enjoy a blend of science, energy and spirit, combined with useful tools to enhance healing and transformation. Maintaining A Positive Attitude At Work — 11 a.m.-noon Oct. 10, Simplot/Micron Center, Room 210. Learn how your attitude affects you and those around you. Optimal Health Screening — 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 11, Hatch B Ballroom Student Union. This screening opportunity will bring together the best practices in integrative medicine to inform employees and students about how to take responsibility for their health. A holistic lifestyle assessment, strengths and weaknesses assessment and referrals to a variety of wellness programming will also be available. Saint Alphonsus Mobile Mammogram — 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 11, Administration Building parking lot. This on-the-job-site service allows quick and convenient access to mammography, one of the best means for early detection of breast cancer. The cost is $137.67 and can be billed to most insurances, subject to deductible. Call 367-3571 for an appointment. 

Nutrition Q & A — 4:15-5:15 p.m., Thursdays (excluding holidays and semester break), Student Recreation Center Fitness Testing and Training Room. Drop by to ask questions and chat with qualified staff about nutrition and weight management issues.

Tai Chi Tuesdays — Noon-1 p.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 16, Quad near Albertsons Library. Students, faculty and staff are invited to enjoy the calming, rejuvenating, ancient practice of Tai Chi with instructor Jeffrey Vik. For more information contact Carol Pangburn, cpangbu@boisestate.edu.

Healthcare 2007: Managing the Future — 7 p.m. Oct. 16, Morrison Center. In his Distinguished Lecture Series presentation, Dr. Louis Sullivan proposes a two-pronged approach to improve the nation’s health-care system — changing people’s own health habits and fine-tuning the overall system. Sullivan explains how health facilitators must educate the American people to be a part of the solution themselves by promoting healthy lifestyles and making prevention a top, national priority. He also gives suggestions on what role the government can play to improve the overall system. Admission is free.

Meditation Group — 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays Oct. 22 through Dec. 3. Student Union. The regular practice of sitting meditation has been shown to enhance every aspect of living — emotionally, physically and spiritually. This meditation group will provide a brief introduction to the practice each week, followed by a meditation session. Students, faculty and staff are invited to join and enjoy the benefits of a regular meditation practice at no charge. Flu Shot Clinics — Main campus: 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 24 and 31; 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 7; and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 21. Health & Wellness Center. BSU West: 3-6 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Student Services Conference Room. Canyon County Center: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 8. Boise State Health Fair: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Student Recreation Center. Walk-in patients will be accepted only during the Wednesday clinics, as noted above. Departments, clubs, etc., that wish to receive the vaccine as a group are asked to call Mary Kenworthy at ext. 6-1490 prior to arrival to ensure that adequate staff are available to administer the vaccines. Employees must bring ID. The fee is $25 for faculty and staff and is not billed to insurance. Departments that purchase vaccines for staff members should forward a roster to Kenworthy at marykenworthy@boisestate.edu  or fax ext. 6-3005.

Unleash Your Inner Chef – Mediterranean Style — 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 25, Lookout Room, Student Union. Join campus nutritionist Hilary Horton-Brown and instructor Linda Jarsky as they demonstrate simple techniques to prepare healthy, delicious Mediterranean cuisine.  The session is free and wonderful samples will be provided. Knots and Other Trouble Spots — 6:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 6, Farnsworth Room, Student Union. This highly interactive workshop is designed to instruct participants on massage and relaxation techniques that may be applied to specific areas of the body that are more prone to pain. Areas of focus by instructor Jennifer Aumeier will include neck, shoulders and lower back. Participants will learn to reduce pain by the introduction of trigger point therapy as a self-care tool for alleviating chronic pain caused by a variety of conditions. Trigger point therapy has been used for decades by doctors, pain specialists and massage therapists to quickly stimulate the flow of oxygen and promote rapid pain reduction. If Kenny Can Do It So Can You! — noon-1 p.m. Nov. 8, Boyington Room, Student Union. Taking off weight and beginning (not to mention maintaining) a healthy lifestyle can be difficult. And no one knows better than our own Kenny Wiscomb. A dedicated Student Recreation Center member and Boise State employee, Kenny exemplifies what it means to take one day at a time and work to better yourself. Boise State Health Fair — 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 14, Student Recreation Center. Health information, screenings, demonstrations, prize drawings and more will be featured. Flu shot and meningitis vaccine will also be available.

Great American Smoke Out — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 15, Student  Union, Quad, BSU West. Free quit kits, giveaways, tobacco cessation services and information on the effects of smoking will be offered.

Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings — 7-8 p.m. Wednesdays (excluding holidays and semester breaks), Student Union. Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experiences, strength and hope with each other to solve their common issues and help others to recover from alcoholism. Meetings held at Boise State welcome new participants regularly. Check the SUB kiosk the day of the meeting for the room location.

Chair Massage — The chair massage program offers university departments, organizations and groups an affordable and convenient way for a certified massage therapist to be available at organized campus events. Chair massage is a great form of stress relief that can be provided for gatherings, meetings and celebrations on campus.

The cost is $40 per hour for the services of one massage therapist. For scheduling information contact Wellness Services at ext. 6-5686 or wellness@boisestate.edu

Arrangement for services needs to be made two weeks in advance.

General Massage — 4-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays. Massages are available to all Boise State students, faculty and staff at an affordable rate on campus.

Fees are $35 for one hour for Student Recreation Center members; $40 for one hour for non-members; $20 for 30 minutes for members; and $25 for 30 minutes for non-members. To schedule an appointment call ext. 6-1131.
