Boise State Receives $200,000 Grant to Implement Innovative Faculty Career Flexibility Initiatives

Boise State is one of six national recipients of the 2007-08 Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Faculty Career Flexibility, the American Council on Education recently announced.

Each accelerator award of $200,000 will enable the institutions to expand and enhance flexible career paths for faculty. The Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Faculty Career Flexibility recognize colleges and universities for their leadership and accomplishments in implementing groundbreaking policies and practices supporting career flexibility for tenured and tenure-track faculty. The awards program is sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and conducted by the American Council on Education with support from the Families and Work Institute.

Other recipients this year included Canisius College, Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, Simmons College and the University of Baltimore. The awards program was open to 325 institutions. Last year’s award recipients were Duke University, Lehigh University, University of California (Berkeley and Davis campuses), University of Florida and the University of Washington.

Capital Scholars Program Provides Renewable $1,000 Scholarships for High School Juniors

Hundreds of Idaho high school juniors will be notified in February by mail that they are eligible for a renewable $1,000 scholarship for up to five years to attend Boise State through its Capital Scholars academic achievement program. The scholarship fund is endowed by the Linda Yanke family and sales proceeds from the Boise State Bookstore.

Selection is based on college entrance examination scores and class rankings. All Idaho high school juniors who score in the top 10 percent of the ACT, SAT or PSAT and rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class will be recognized as Boise State Capital Scholars. The cut-off scores to qualify in the top 10 percent of the college entrance exams are: 27 or higher on the ACT, 1220 or higher on the critical reading and math sections of the SAT, or 122 or higher on the critical reading and math sections of the PSAT.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Four Venues in Use for Next Month’s Invitational Winter Games

Boise State will be the site of several activities in February for the Special Olympics Invitational Winter Games – a precursor to the Special Olympics World Winter Games next year.

Opening Ceremonies will be held Feb. 25 at Taco Bell Arena and Closing Ceremonies will be Feb. 28 at the Bronco Gymnasium. The floor hockey competition will be conducted at the Student Recreation Center. The Student Union Building will host other programs, athletic entertainment, Healthy Athletes and food services.

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE OBAMA TO SPEAK AT TACO BELL ARENA SATURDAY

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama will visit Idaho and speak at Taco Bell Arena Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public; doors will open at 7 a.m. For security reasons bags will not allowed inside the event and signs or banners will also be prohibited. For more information, call 345-6210.

Public parking will be free for Obama’s speech. Those attending the event should park in the lot on the east side of Bronco Stadium, the Lincoln Parking Structure, the Rec Center general lot, and lots located south of University Drive. All open parking areas will have event parking signs at the entrances to the lots and parking attendants directing them into the correct parking areas. There will be limited handicap parking in the west stadium parking lot. Other parking restrictions will apply for on-campus events later on Saturday (see parking article below).

The 2008 Invitational Winter Games will include about 495 athletes and coaches from 10 countries and four U.S. states, competing in five sports. Other venues include Bogus Basin Ski Resort for alpine skiing, Sun Valley Resort for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and Tamarack Resort for snowboarding.

The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games will host 3,000 athletes from 85 countries from Feb. 6-13.

Sawtooth Poetry Prize

Ahsahta Press Announces Winning 2007 Sawtooth Poetry Prize Manuscript

Boise State’s Ahsahta Press has announced the winner of its 2007 Sawtooth Poetry Prize, Rusty Morrison, and will publish “The True Keeps Calm Biding Its Story.”

Morrison, of Richmond, Calif., became the sixth winner of the prize after poet Peter Gizzi selected her manuscript for the $1,500 award. The book had recently also won the Alice Fay di Castagnola Award from the Poetry Society of America, a prize for a manuscript in progress. Ahsahta Press is publishing her second book.

The poems in “The True Keeps Calm Biding Its Story” give a step-by-step accounting of the speaker’s transformation as she reconciles herself to the death of her father. Gizzi called it “a joyous read and a remarkable book.”

Talkin’ Broncos

Team Wins 2008 Northwest Forensics Conference Sweepstakes

The Boise State Talkin’ Broncos continued their strong season with a win that garnered the overall sweepstakes award in the Northwest Forensics Conference. The award is based on overall team performance at three designated NFC tournaments.

Three Talkin’ Broncos were honored for their individual accomplishments in speech and debate at the William O. Douglas Forensics Tournament at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., this past weekend. Emile Huseynov (junior, Azerbaijan) received the Orv Iverson Award for the top novice competitors in the Northwest Conference. Erik Sande (junior, Boise) was a top-10 finisher for the Iverson award, and Chad Judy (senior, Idaho Falls) was recognized as one of the 10 best speakers overall in the NFC with the 2008 Coach’s Commemorative Award.

Boise competitors were named as the top debaters in a field of 20 schools at the tournament, with Huseynov, Regan Charlton (sophomore, Inkom) and Aaron Olson (freshman, Bremerton, Wash.) all placing within the top 10 among more than 160 debaters.

Meditation, Massage Sessions Offered

Health Wellness and Counseling Services will offer the following sessions to employees.

Meditation Group — Wednesdays noon-1 p.m. Feb. 6-May 7 except spring break.

The regular practice of sitting meditation has been shown to enhance every aspect of living. This group session will provide a brief introduction to the practice each week, followed by a meditation session. Students, faculty and staff are invited to join and enjoy the benefits of a regular meditation practice. Check the SUB kiosk the day of each session for room location. Couples Massage Workshop — 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 11 or Feb. 12 in the Student Union.

In this experiential workshop, couples will learn massage techniques, communication skills and new ways of relating to each other. Instructor: Jennifer Aumeier, licensed massage therapist. Fee: $40 a couple, including instructional materials and gift bag.

The Budget Office will offer the following training sessions this spring. These sessions are open to all faculty and staff at no charge.

Staff from the Budget Office and Administrative Accounting will facilitate this workshop and address issues such as basic budget research, budget transfer requests, voucher research, and fringe calculations.

Jordan Ballroom Reopening Scheduled Feb. 6

The Student Union invites all members of the campus community to the reopening of the Grace Jordan Ballroom from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 6. Writing Center Opens

The Boise State Writing Center is open for the spring semester. The Writing Center is a free service open to any student at Boise State. The center works with writers from any discipline, at any stage of the writing process: brainstorming, revising, editing. All consultations are done by appointment, and writers can make an appointment through the center’s Web page (www.boisestate.edu/wcenter), in person (Liberal Arts Building, Room 200), or over the phone (ext. 6-1298). ‘Culture of Success’ Scheduled on Campus Friday

This Friday from 10:45-7 p.m. the Admissions Office will host “Culture of Success,” formerly known as “Black to the Future,” a program that promotes higher education among African-American high school students in the Treasure Valley.

Participants will attend workshops at the College of Engineering and Department of Chemistry and get tips on how to enhance their chances for success in the college environment. In addition, the students will explore housing options on campus and tour the Interactive Learning Center.

PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION SERVICES

Saturday Events Restrictions Posted

Because of a number of public events on campus this Saturday, Parking and Transportation Services has posted the following restrictions for that day:

Barack Obama Speech, 8:30 a.m. — Public parking will be free for this event. Those attending the event should park in the lot on the east side of Bronco Stadium, the Lincoln Parking Structure, the Rec Center general lot, and lots located south of University Drive. All open parking areas will have event parking signs at the entrances to the lots and parking attendants directing them to the correct parking areas.

Discover Engineering Day, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. — Parking will be free in the Lincoln Parking Structure and Rec Center general lot.

International Food, Song and Dance, 5-10 p.m. — Parking will be free for attendees in the Liberal Arts and Library lots.

Idaho-Boise State men’s basketball game, 7 p.m. —The west stadium lot general and metered areas near Taco Bell Arena will close starting at 3:30 p.m. Motorists who have parked prior to the lot closing do not have to relocate their vehicles. Basketball parking will be offered in the stadium lots, starting at 5:30 p.m. All valid BSU parking passes will be honored in the east stadium, Extended Studies, and Rec Center parking lots. The Bronco Athletic Association will have reserved parking in portions of the west stadium lot, east stadium lot, Manitou lot, and the Rec Center lot. The west stadium lot and Bronco Circle are reserved parking only with limited accessible parking.

Paid parking will be offered for those without a permit in the east Stadium lot, Extended Studies lot, and the Lincoln Parking Structure. The best place for fans to park for the game is the Lincoln Parking Structure. The entrances are located off Belmont and Lincoln Avenue and University Drive and Michigan Avenue. Parking is $5 per vehicle. A free shuttle will be provided to and from Taco Bell Arena.

An Audubon Society volunteer answers questions from children in a school group who took part in Bald Eagle Days at Barber Park last week. Hosted by Boise State’s Idaho Bird Observatory, Bald Eagle Days is an annual educational effort to raise local awareness, appreciation and support for the Boise River and its wildlife. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, school groups and families from the community were invited to view wildlife along the Boise River, listen to informative presentations featuring live bald eagles and other birds of prey, and participate in hands-on educational raptor displays. Faculty & Staff In Action

Ann Klautsch, theatre arts, was the focus of a story on the front of the Idaho Statesman’s Life Section. Klautsch is assisting Boise Contemporary Theatre as a dialect coach for a production titled “Pillowman.”

Nina Ray, marketing, and Nere Lete, modern languages and literatures, co-authored an article in the current issue of Global Business Languages titled "Basque Studies: Commerce, Heritage, and a Language Less Commonly Taught, but Whole-Heartedly Celebrated." The authors discuss the commercial importance of Basque as one of the world's less commonly taught languages and report the results of a survey taken during the First International Basque Studies Conference held at Boise State in April 2007. Ray has also been named a member of the Fulbright Senior Specialist Roster by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Listing on the roster will allow Ray to be matched with incoming program requests from overseas academic institutions for Fulbright Senior Specialists with expertise in her field.

Lisa McClain (left), associate professor in the Department of History and director of Gender Studies, and Denise Wingett (right), associate professor in the Department of Biology, will be featured in a glossy magazine published in the Idaho Business Review on March 10 and honored at an awards dinner on March 13 at the Boise Centre on the Grove. Shawn Novak, accountancy, and a co-author just published the lead article in Corporate Taxation's January/February 2008 issue. The title of the article is "The Disallowance Provision of Section 162(K)" and it discusses the disallowance of deductible costs incurred by a corporation in connection with the reacquisition of its stock.
