Men’s, women’s basketball teams seek WAC championships tonight
It’s a big week for Bronco athletics with the men’s and women’s basketball teams both seeking to claim sole possession of the Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship and the wrestling team winning the Pac-10 championship on Monday.
The men’s basketball team (22-7 overall, 12-3 in the WAC) has clinched at least a share of the regular-season title and hosts Utah State today at 7 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena. A win over the Aggies in tonight’s regular-season finale would give the Bronco men the title outright and the top seed in next week’s WAC Tournament. A win tonight would also guarantee the men a spot in the NIT if they fail to win the conference tournament next week in Las Cruces, N.M., and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Athletic Department is asking fans attending tonight’s game to wear orange as part of an “Orange Out” to support the Broncos. To help fuel the “Orange Out” the Bronco Shop will have numerous locations set up inside Taco Bell Arena selling special $5 game-day orange T-shirts. Additionally, 5,000 orange pompoms will be distributed at the game, helping to create the sea of orange. Tonight’s game is also Senior Night.
The stakes are just as high for the women’s basketball team (21-6, 13-2 WAC) which will close the regular season and defense of its WAC championship at Utah State tonight in Logan, Utah. A victory over the Aggies will clinch at least a share of the WAC regular-season title. Boise State is tied with Fresno State in league losses with two each.
In addition, nine Bronco wrestlers are heading to the NCAA Championships later this month in St. Louis after Boise State claimed the Pac-10 crown, its fourth, Monday in Eugene, Ore., behind individual champs Cory Fish (133 pounds) and Nate Lee (174).
Sports action continues through the weekend at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex with the women’s tennis team hosting San Diego Friday at 2 p.m. and the men’s team hosting San Diego Saturday at 1 p.m. Also, members of the Boise State track and field team will be preparing for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., Mar. 14-15.
