Diverse Perspectives Film Series

Series to Screen Documentary 'Iron Ladies of Liberia'

The Boise State Diverse Perspectives Film Series will screen “Iron Ladies of Liberia” from 5:30-7 p.m. today in the Student Union Barnwell Room. Admission is free and open to the public.

On its surface, “Iron Ladies of Libreria” is a straightforward profile of a remarkable woman: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia. After being imprisoned for criticizing the previous governments of Samuel Doe and Charles Taylor, Sirleaf took office in January 2006 facing the immense challenge of repairing the social and economic fabric of a country torn apart by years of civil war. The transition to peace and stability is fragile, and the obstacles are significant: a battered infrastructure, 90 percent unemployment, debt that far exceeds the country’s GDP, widespread corruption and ongoing factional tensions. The film takes viewers behind the scenes of government operations to reveal a complex balancing act between optimism and frustration.

SELLAND COLLEGE

Selland College's 'Yes You Can' Marketing Campaign Wins 7 National Awards

The Larry Selland College’s "Yes You Can" campaign and marketing materials have been recognized for quality, creativity and message effectiveness at the 23rd annual Admission Advertising Awards competition, the largest national educational advertising awards event.

The competition included 2,000 entries from more than 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide. Judges for the event included national marketers, creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals. Under the direction of Kellie Branson, Selland College marketing director, college brochures, postcards and other promotional pieces received seven awards, including gold, silver, bronze and merit.

“We have a very small marketing budget and could not achieve this level of success without the help of our partners,” Branson said. They include Julie Rybarcyzk, a freelance graphic designer/copywriter, and Ted Bailey and Shalom Pennington, professionals from Boise State Printing and Graphics.

Several of the award-winning pieces were created using new digital imaging technology now available at the Boise State Print Shop. The technology allowed the college to produce unique design layouts and personalize materials that were sent to prospective students.

The "Yes You Can" campaign has become very popular and has achieved its initial objectives of showcasing college programs and services, increasing enrollments and building a brand that appeals to a variety of target audiences.
