Outdoor Program Plans April Events

The Student Recreation Center has announced the following April activities for members of the Boise State community:

• Multi-Day River Trip Planning — 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Outdoor Program. Free. Learn how to efficiently plan a multi-day river trip. This session will cover food buys and prep, transportation, shuttles, land management regulations, equipment rentals, and the best camp sites and hikes on the river section you are running. • Multi-Day River Trip Menu Planning and Camp Cooking — 7-9 p.m. April 9. Outdoor Program. Free. Learn to cook gourmet food while camping in the outdoors. This clinic will teach you the tricks of the pros while emphasizing outdoor kitchen safety. Bring your questions and appetite. Register at rec.boisestate.edu/outdoor/specialty/index.cfm. • Standard First Aid with AED (adult CPR included) — 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. April 12 and 18. Student Recreation Center Classroom. $45. Registration continues until 5 p.m. April 9 for April 12 and until 5 p.m. April 15 for April 18. This eight-hour (with lunch break) class gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for breathing emergencies, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Additionally, you will learn the skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illness until advanced medical personnel arrive. All participants who pass the class will receive American Red Cross certifications in adult CPR, AED and standard first aid. Register at rec.boisestate.edu/services/response/events.cfm. • Whitewater Kayaking 101 — Session 1 of Whitewater Kayaking 101 takes place on April 14 and 16 in the pool located in the Kinesiology Annex and then on April 19 in the river. Session 2 of Whitewater Kayaking 101 takes place on April 15 and 17 in the pool located in the Kinesiology Annex and then on April 20 in the river. Registration continues until April 9. These three-day seminars will offer students an opportunity to explore the basic techniques of kayaking. In the pool we will learn the history, equipment, stroke techniques for proper boat control, and the Eskimo roll. The river trips will focus on river reading, eddy turns, ferries, basic principles of river safety, and lots of fun. • Outdoor Program Day Hikes — Owyhee Desert: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. April 12; registration until April 9. A packing list will be provided when you register. • Outdoor Climbing — 7-9 p.m. April 10, Climbing Gym and 7-9 p.m. April 12, Black Cliffs. Registration continues until 5 p.m. April 7. Sign up to learn about climbing history, equipment, knot tying, rope handling, proper belay techniques, and movement on rock. The first session of the seminar will be held in the Boise State Climbing Gym and will serve as a transition to outdoor climbing. On day two we will journey off campus and head to the Black Cliffs for a full day of outdoor climbing. All climbing equipment will be provided by the Outdoor Program. • Women That Rock — 7-9 p.m. April 11, Climbing Gym. Want to try out indoor climbing, learn a new sport, or diversify your regular workout? Join us for our exclusive women-only nights. Each session offers a two-hour basic skills clinic for new climbers and open climbing for seasoned climbers. Women that Rock costs $5 for non-members and is free for members. There is also a one-time required basic skills clinic, which costs $5 and includes instruction and equipment. Register at rec.boisestate.edu/outdoor/climbing/events.cfm. • Massage 102 — 7-9 p.m. April 16, Rec Center Classroom. Learn the benefits of therapeutic massage and hands-on techniques to decrease pain, increase range of motion, as well as for general muscle health and relaxation. Massage 102 costs $15 for members and $20 for non-members. This fee includes instructional materials. Be sure to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and bring a pillow, blanket, or cushion for comfort. Register at rec.boisestate.edu/services/massage/workshops.cfm. • Whitewater Kayaking 102 — Whitewater Kayaking 102 takes place on April 29 and May 1 in the pool located in the Kinesiology Annex. You depart on May 3 for the overnight river camp and return on May 4 to the Recreation Center. Registration continues until April 23. During this class your roll, brace, and other skills will be fine- tuned in the pool. Then we will head to the river for two days of progressive skill development. On the river you will learn advanced river running skills, river reading skills, river rescue, play boating, and surfing techniques. The class will camp together on Saturday night at the river. The cost is $150 and the fee includes transportation, equipment, and instruction. Meals are the responsibility of the participants. Register at rec.boisestate.edu/outdoor/education/water.cfm. • Drop-In Kayak and Demo Kayak Nights — 7-10 p.m. April 8, Kinesiology Annex. Kayak demo nights are sponsored by the Outdoor Program, Alpenglow, and Idaho River Sports. Stop by to meet their team ambassadors and try out the latest equipment. These nights are also a great way to learn about the upcoming spring boat swaps.
