Emeriti Faculty and Staff to be Honored at 82nd Commencement

In addition to the 1,795 Boise State students who are eligible for graduation this spring, the university will recognize nine new faculty members who have achieved emeritus status so far this year during Saturday’s Commencement ceremony.

Five staff members have also achieved emeritus status since January. The 14 members of the Boise State family join 471 retired emeriti faculty and staff who have earned the special designation over the years for their lengthy service and significant contributions to the university.

Also the university has established the Boise State Emeritus Guild, an association designed to enhance the relationship between emeriti faculty and staff and the university. The group’s mission is to recognize and honor emeriti for their contributions to the university and to provide continued social and professional connections to one another, to the university and to the community.

Those who have achieved emeritus status since January 2008 include: Dan Cadwell, Jan Centanni, Connie Charlton, Stephen Christensen, Stuart Evett, Lyman Gallup, Roxanne Gunner, Alan Hausrath, Daniel Lester, Phyllis Lyons, Janet Mills, Andrew Schoedinger, John Taye and Diane Wyett.

The new emeriti faculty and staff were honored with a luncheon on May 5 hosted by the president’s office and provost’s office. More than 160 people attended and heard emeritus faculty member Claude Spinosa share information about summer geology field trips to Italy that he hosts.

Emeriti faculty or staff members who have recently won an award, published a book or achieved other honors are invited to share their accomplishments. Send e-mail to emeritusguild@boisestate.edu, or visit boisestate.edu/emeritusguild for more information.

Commencement will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in Taco Bell Arena. Boise State will award an honorary doctorate to Idaho educator and astronaut Barbara R. Morgan, who flew aboard the space shuttle Endeavor last August as part of an educator-astronaut mission. She is the sixth person to receive an honorary doctorate from Boise State.

The traditional Commencement ceremony will include the processional and recessional of candidates as well as individual recognition of each person. About 1,000 Boise State students are expected to participate in the ceremony.

Arena doors will open at 8:30 a.m., and the ceremony is expected to end at about noon.
