On-Campus Housing Still Available for Fall Semester

Despite rumors to the contrary, not all on-campus student housing is full for fall semester, according to Jeff Hale, the executive director of university housing.

“We have about 150 beds still available on campus for fall,” Hale said, “so if faculty or staff members know of a student who wants a place on campus, send them our way.”

Even after the approximately 1,500 on-campus slots are full, which will easily happen this summer, Hale said students can come to his staff for help in finding a place to live even after classes start on Aug. 25.

“We have our ear to the ground for housing opportunities near campus to help students who wanted to live on campus, but didn’t sign up in time,” Hale said. “We do everything we can to accommodate everyone possible.”

Rumors the all on-campus beds are full are, in part, the result of the university’s record-setting growth, Hale said. Because people know that space is tight on campus, they often assume the worst. Hale worries that students may get discouraged and may not even try to find a room on campus, when all they need do is apply.

Hale said that as recently as 2004, Boise State had only 800 on-campus beds. Since then, additions of new dorms and on-campus apartments, the conversion of the old University Inn to student housing and the conversion of office space in Barnes Towers into rooms leaves a capacity of about 1,500 beds today.

And Hale hopes an agreement with American Campus Communities to plan additional student housing will bring a significant number of new beds to campus by fall 2010.

“We’re making great strides to provide more living-learning opportunities for students,” he said.
