Summer Enrollment Up Nearly 10 Percent

Enrollment in Boise State’s summer programs is up nearly 10 percent — or about 500 students — over last summer. The first three-week session began on May 19, followed by the start of five-, eight- and ten-week sessions this week. Enrollment in those classes is tracking 8.7 percent to 9.7 percent ahead of last year. A total of 6,159 students have enrolled as of this week.

An increasing number of students have enrolled in core and upper-division undergraduate classes, particularly in the sciences, according to Linda Urquidi, summer school director. As classes fill, Boise State has added new sections to accommodate more students.

Students appear to be using summer classes to help them graduate earlier or to get pre-requisites out of the way before fall semester begins, Urquidi said. Full-time students can more easily graduate in four years by adding one class each summer.

Gene Harris Jazz Festival

drummer Roy Haynes Jazz in June, the final event of Boise State University’s Gene Harris Jazz Festival, will kick off Thursday with Club Night. Jazz in June will wrap up with a gospel concert on June 21.

Jazz in June follows the Gene Harris Endowment Night in November, which raised money for the jazz pianist’s endowment at Boise State, and the Jazz Bash in April, which featured workshops for students from around the state.

Tickets for this year’s Jazz in June festivities are $30 general, $10 students for Club Night; and $25-$80 general, $15 students, for the Roy Haynes concert. Faculty and staff are eligible for a 20 percent discount on the Haynes concert ($22.50-$69); discounted tickets are only available at the Morrison Center box office and the discount does not apply to previously purchased tickets. The Gene Harris Bandshell concerts and the gospel concert are free.

Some of the 87 students on campus for the Boise State Chamber Music Camp got a special opportunity this summer — they were able to attend the weeklong camp without an added financial burden. The William Jackson Scholarship Fund provided full scholarships for 15 outstanding students so they could study music theory, take private lessons, and perform in small chamber ensemble performances and the camp choir. William “Action” Jackson founded the scholarship in honor of his late son.
